i've just completed my small studio in my back garden and have noticed that any music i play through my stereo seems a lot more bass heavy than it used too. even comercial cd's sound different. i've got plenty of absorbtion on the walls but maybe i've done it wrong. can anyone tell me how to fix this problem. i've attatched a few images to help,

thanks

simon

It's just a damn small space, that's why there's so much bass. You've got a lot of absorption, but with a space that small I'd venture to say you'd need more.

Well looking at the room, it looks like there was alot of high frequency reflective surfaces before and now theres not. That would have made the highs stand out more. Maybe now its just evened out?

Yeah, that's tiny, especially from a width standpoint and that ceiling is tough. Definitely, you need to treat the back wall and back corners, too. The back walls are still first reflection areas, as seen in this pic from Ethan Winer's website. Bass Traps, bass traps, bass traps...everywhere, bass traps. ;)

In a room that size, you're going to need at least the additional 2 rear corners floor to ceiling. Next in line is the front wall/ceiling intersection straddling plus the side wall/ceiling intersection straddling beside the mix position.

Also, given the room size and speaker locations, you're probably getting a lot of boundary reinforcement. 4" panels directly behind and directly beside the monitors will help tame that part of the problem.

if you look at this room mode calculation - you have major nodes at 49, 85, and 95hz. the 49hz on the length would possible be helped by added some bass absorbtion on the far wall - maybe a few 4" traps out about 1 foot or so. the 85 and 95hz will be much harder in such a small space and with this kind of modal reinforcement you might find using some eq on the monitors is needed to balance it or some panel traps (check Ethan Winers most excellent site). best best is to measure the levels from 30hz through 250hz in 1hz increments to find out what you're really up against.
