Background - From '72 to '79 I did varied technical stage/studio work. Mostlly stage and studio audio, some theatre work. Then I got a real job :) Now, 33 years later, I have decided to build a small audio/video studio. Today, I make my living as a network admin type. So, as I search to acquire equiment, I need some advice. My thoughts are to mix the analog world (where I am most comfortable in the audio realm) with the digital world. To do this, I am haunting EBay for used quality analog equipment and such items. I have 2 PC's. One would be primarily for video input and edit (Pinnacle DV500 & Premiere 6). The other would do duty as a mixdown for the audio, possibly as an effects processor (?) They would, of course have to sync with each other, and this is one area that i am in the dark.

What I have so far is - Alesis 1622 mixer. 4 patchbays. Tascam 122.

My next step is the main recording device. I am looking at the Alesis' the ADAT XT. It seems to be available at a reasonable cost, has both digital and analog i/o. And some confusing (for me) sync options. Any thoughts? I have also considered the Delta 44/66, though 8 channels are really required. I may end up with both an outboard ADAT and a Delta to route digital i/o through the PC for processing and mastering in the digital realm. ??

Effects processing - Outbaord analog, outboard digital, PC, or a combination of all? My thoughts-
analog 2 ch compressor/gate
analog vocal processer
2 ch digital effects processor
PC effects processing

Any advice here would be appreciated. Especially in the area of syncing all this stuff together and recommendatons in particular used cost effective equipment. I seem to be heading down a dark alley, and would apprectiate any lih=ght you all can shed :)

First of all, welcome to our home here at HR.COM. :)

Secondly, you'll need midi IN and OUT on both computers for communication (sync) purposes.

Thirdly, I'd suggest that you look at the Delta 1010 instead of the Delta 66 or 44. The 1010 will give you the inputs you will need (to accept the inputs coming from the ADAT). http://www.midiman.net

You will also need to purchase some reference monitors (but I'm sure that you already know that :) ).

I'll post back later.

Thanks for the reply.

I do not speak midi....I am ashamed to admit that I have no idea what midi would be useful for... I know what it means, I understand the details of the spec, but have no pratical understanding:( As far as sync, I think I will need to sync to video in Premiere. Somehow. I just got Premiere, so don't know it enough yet. I don't know enough above he different sync types to make an informed decision. I think I need to know more... word clock, STMPE(?) midi, etc.

Suprisingly enough, I had the 1010 on my screen this morning. Looks pretty good, though a little more than I wnt to spent. The MOTU 2408 also looks good, though, again, out of my range. Maybe the ADAT/Edit card?

That is a subject on my mind... I am thinking actives of some sort.

Thanks again
