I'm ready to start building absorbers for my small shed studio but i'm wondering how to go about it. there are so many threads and websites with slightly varying designs i'm not sure which one to go for. i've got spare rigid rockwool slabs (50 x 455 x 1200mm) and was simply going to build a wooden frame to fit them in, cover in material and hang them on the wall. i've noticed however that some designs have a layer of plywood or similar material covering one side of the frame. is this necassary and how will this affect the absobtion. also, does the same go for bass traps?

thanks

You really need to read up a bit more on this. I know because I am about one small step in front of you. LMBO! There is a lot of information available on this subject and you really need to comb through it a few times in order to get a grasp on what technology is out there. Ethan Winer's site has a ton of help and it is a great place to get advice. His forum http://www.musicplayer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?/ubb/forum/f/26.html has a great group of very knowlegable guys that are willing to answer questions.

Just build a frame and cover ith fabric. Covering the back of the absorber with a reflective surface won't allow the space behind the absorber to help, in lower frequencies. ie a 2" absorber with 2" airgap, will act like a 4" absorber. If you put plywood, or whatever, the 2" will only ever act like 2". There are a few ways of making a bass trap, one is just 4" rigidfiberglass in a frame covered in fabric; another is a sealed trap where the rigidfiberglass is placed in the corner with a frame attached to the wall then plywood, or something, is screwed to the front. All gaps are then sealed. This design works by reflecting mid-high frequencies, and allowing bass frequencies to vibrate the plywood and for it to be absorbed by the fiberglass(i can't explain it any better, sorry). It is easier and cheaper to make the former, and it allows for all frequencies to be absorbed. This is the one most people go for. Just make a frame, preferably leaving the edges exposed, put the rigid fg in, and coverthe whole thing in fabric.

thanks for the replies. very helpfull. will probably go with the idea of framed fibre glass covered in fabric,

many thanks
