I'm playing around with the Control Change Table and I want to be able to save my variations somehow. The manual says something about saving to a MIDI Data filer... what the hell is that? Is there a program out there? I really don't want to buy some hardware to do it.

Also, I read a review of the VM200 that said that you can get around the 119 Controller limit by using the mixer controls transmitting MIDI NRPNs (Non-Registered Parameter Numbers) - The use of NRPNs for MIDI automation which would mean that the issue of running out of MIDI Controllers doesn't arise. What the hell are MIDI NRPN's and how do edit/find/implement them?

I've edited my user Control Change Table to give me 20 channel faders, and 80 aux faders. pretty sweet...

NRPN's

Well.........
I can tell you that RPN's and NRPN's are "Registered/Non-Registerd Parameter Numbers", and they are in effect, controller change messages, transmitted by midi, only they use MSB (most significant bit), and LSB (least significant bit) values to communicate. However, the data vaules can be anywhere from 0 to around 17,000, so I believe that you have more precise control over parameter change values. You would have to get a detailed midi implementation chart from Fostex to see how the VM-200 behaves to these commands.
Or....you get get the free program Midiox. www.midiox.com (assuming you're using a PC)
When it's properly hooked up, you can see detailed readout info from your midi equipment. For instance, if you move a fader on the VM-200, it will spew out a string of commands.
As to the question of saving control change numbers, I'm not sure, but I know Fostex includes a page where you can write down the User control change settings, so I would ASSume that one would be able to play with the settings.
I can check into this.

Good luck,
Tony

Thanks, Tony. What I meant by save my control change table, was save it externally of the vm200.. so that I can save many variations and then import them since the vm200 only has 1 user editable control change table. Now that I've figured out how to manipulate the vm200 midi controls, I can see that the vm200 is one of the best midi daw control surfaces there is. I still can't believe the thing never really caught on and that fostex discontinued it.

what DAW are you using? I know SONAR can let you dump data via sysex, and they also have "instrument defintions" for various midi equipment.

I actually have those if you or anyone else would like them. I've also created my own for gear that I have.

I did sysex dumps to and from Sonar. Nice.... I am the MIDI controller king baby! Yeah, please send what you have. I started to make a panel, but I'm burned out on MIDI mapping right now. I've been done about 5 different templates in Nuendo all from scratch. Phew!
