Currently have a Toneport UX2 and want to expand my track capacity with some kind of Firewire interface but am not sure about compatability issues. I've read somwhere Toneport wont work with some FW interfaces like Phonic Helix FW boards because they're both seen by your PC as soundcards and only one may be selected at a time as your input source in multitrack programs. It also seems the Toneport also has no native reamping capability on its own unless you pay for thier costly plugin upgrade to get the same sounds you already paid for once. Blahhh

A possible solution I thought may just be to run the Toneport software in paralell with any multitrack program instead of using the device as your primary sound source and then run it into your FW interface like you would any other external preamp. I would think you could also run it into the digital input for two extra tracks without tying up the other mic/line inputs of the interface and if the FW interface has individual track outs then I dont see why you just couldnt reamp it and skip thier plugin suite all together. Am I right about all this or is there something I'm overlooking?

I"m interested in the MOTU Ultralight, MOTU Traveller, or possibly even the Helix 24-FW still (If I could figure out how to route at least two individual tracks from the PC back to the mixer and still hear the mix elswhere. It does have two return FW tracks meant for monitering)

Any advice or direction in the $300-$700 range woud be helpful. By the way, the Helix mixer would have been replacing a Behringer MX3242 mixer which should still be useful gear if it doesnt. I also Have a Vox Tonelab, Digitech RP21D, and several external amps to work with outside the box if I want.

Thanks

In between that price range, I would HIGHLY recommend the MOTU Ultralite or the Presonus firepod.
