When I try and record, the quality is incredibly bad and the volume is extremely low. I have to crank my computer speakers just so I can make out what I'm supposed to be playing behind that muffled fuzz.

All knobs on guitar are fine. Tonelab is set up fine, with decent cables. It's a new adapter to plug into the line in slot. Everything in the windows volume control options is on, with the volume turned up.

Using a 'Creative Sound Blaster PCI' soundcard, not great but it shouldn't be this bad!

Help please?

The Tonelab has an optical output, correct? If so, get a cheap used soundcard on ebay with optical inputs (like Sounblaster) and run it through that. If you want to spend more, get a nicer soundcard.

Btw, are you sending the signal out from your headphone jack or one (or both with a Y-connector) of the stereo 1/4" jacks?

Hey, I have a Creative Sound Blaster PCI already, so perhaps I am not using it correctly.

I am not sure about your second question, but I have put a line in adapter on the guitar cable coming from the tonelab, and I slotted it into where my brothers microphone was on the back of the pc..

Bingo! That's the problem.

You have used mic-in instead of line-in...

look for the line-in slot.
