Im somewhat new to this, but this is my latest work. It an original song of mine recorded in my apartment in nyc. Let me know if you have any critiques at all, songwriting, recording, mixing, mastering, or otherwise. Let 'em fly. Thanks.

Nice song and good playing. I would bring down the volume a little on the acoustic guitar. It should not be the focus of this song, but the way you have it mixed it sort of is. Also the vocals are good, just too soft. I'd try doubling the vocal and bring up the level to give it some meat. Maybe up the EQ on the vocals at 200ish. Fuller and louder vocals would make this song a lot better!

i agree with GZ about the acoustic guitar. it's a bit distracting. the percussion and bass should be prominent imo. they seem a bit buried. there's no groove to this song. the quick stop and go guitar strumming is too distracting and the song doesn't give off a relaxed vibe the way i think it should. i more prominent bass line would help alot i think.

I liked the instruments but not really so much the inflections and style of singing. lol as if I can talk.

Ok guys, mix version 2.0 is out. I didn't realize it before, but now that you guys have pointed out the overpowering acoustic guitar, I agree 100%. This mix has more emphasis on the drums and bass, and it drops the guitar down a notch. I think its better, as much as it wounds my inner guitarist to bump those levels down. I also changed the electric rhythm guitar. New version is on soundclick.

much better imo. i still think the bass is too buried, but much better.

Hey Mike, good stuff man. I'd say watch what the electric is doing between about 42-45 seconds in....sounds like a flub to me. Also maybe sit the acoustic lower STILL and record an identical track over it and have the acoustics panned out L&R maybe 60-75% (sounds like the acoustic is already panned) and then during the choruses, maybe center the strumming electric to give a nice solid feel.

But good song! Maybe give a little bit more inflection to the bass; sounds like it's sitting low and I'm not really feeling any sort of bottom from it in the mix. Good song though!

This is all good stuff to hear. Im not mixing on studio monitors right now as the computer, audio interface, and mics kind of killed my studio budget for the time being. A couple more mics and a MIDI controller are unfortunately ahead of new monitors on the list. Im mixing on a good consumer 2.1 system, as its what I have access to. Its interesting that everyone is saying I need more bass. On my setup the bass and kick have a good punch to them, but thats on my polk sub. The problem is the level control on the sub, I have no idea where to set it so that its "flat." I can only guess by playing music that I know. My setup is as follows:

Infinity Primus 6.5 bookshelf speakers
Polk Audio PSW 10
JVC 110 watt per channel receiver

Its a pretty good sounding system in general. Im thinking I need to turn that sub level control down, then mix so it sounds good configured that way. Now that I listen to it on my IEMs at work, its definitely missing that low end foundation.

I liked the guitar and singing, but I think because that the background-instruments don`t messure up to the guitar, the guitar sound disturbing, yet with a full band the guitar would work I believe.. yet it sounds too loud maybe..? the tamborin is sometimes out of time, and the bass sounds too low on clean speakers I think..

all in all I believe the whole thing dont messure up with the guitar and the vocal.. and the guitar is a bit too high in volume.

just my humble opinion :D

Hey There - Thanks for posting your song! I enjoyed listening to it. It has a nice melody and feel to it and it was an easy listen for me.

Although I think the song is great, I personally feel like there was a bit of a lack of dymanics throughout. It didn't seem to have any build, even from verses to choruses (I kept hearing the 2 and 4 of the drum beats) and that seemed just a tiny bit monotonous to me. May have been what you were going for, so just a thought.

Your voice is nice and you did a lot of guitar licks throughout which fit well within the song. I would have liked to hear the bass more in the mix and maybe some harmonies (I love harmonies).

Thanks for sharing it and much enjoyed.

monitors should be first on the list of things to get. the problem with your music isn't the musicianship or the sound you're getting, it's just not mixed well.

it's mentioned all over the place on this forum, and i didn't buy into it until i actually did it. in simpilist terms: "Sound treat your room and buy good monitors before anything" if i could do it all again i would have done this first in my home studio. Sound treating isn't even a big deal. just buy some roxul mineral wool or something like it, build some panels and put em up in the corners. it does make a difference.

Agree wholeheartedly. Also, when you finish a mix, burn it to CD and go listen to it in your car, on your crummy laptop speakers, on your home stereo, in headphones, etc, etc. When you get it to sound good in all those places, usually means you've got it mixed well. Also you might try mixing in mono. It helps a great deal getting everything at the right volume. Then when you're done, go back to stereo, and work on panning everything to its own place. This will help your mixes IMO.

OK, just listened to the new version and it's better. I still think the guitars could be dropped back a little bit more. The vocals are louder, which it needed. You might try a little boost at 3000 Hz for the vocals for a little more presence, and cut the guitars a little at 3000 Hz so they sound more in the background. I think it would sound better yet. Also, now that the vocals are louder, they sound like they could use a little compression just to smooth things out. You're getting there.

Good stuff . . . My recommendation would be to drop out the electric guitar completely. The tone is god awful . . . No offense at all, it just sounds like a cheap amp or a pod or something. I wonder how it would sound doing the lead guitar stuff with the acoustic. Might be something to try out. Good song though. It's catchy. The vocals remind of Gin Blossoms. Keep it up!
