Anyone catch this concert on KCET last night? What an amazing collection of vintage and new guitars the band cycles through! Some nice looking amps, too. Those guys have great taste.

Mike Campbell played a green Rickenbacker mandolin on one tune. Looks like a miniature 300 series Rick. Pretty cool.

I caught that. Great show. They also showed an older concert of his right after it. 2 for 2 baby!

I saw quite a bit of the concert and I was amazed every time they switched guitars (seemed like every song). They must have one hell of a collection.

Yeah, that band was tighter than a nat's ass streched over a rain barrel.

Sure was a lot of guitars. A couple of times I had to ask myself if it was really necessary to switch to play first position rhythm stuff, but it was fun to see what they'd play next. Kind of like that guy a few years back on Saturday Night Live.

What guy?
Probably either Billy Gibbons of ZZ top or Rick nielson of Cheap trick. Both have extensive gtr collections.....

No Trouble. I remember reading somwhere that he has quite a collection.

Oh yeah. I remember G.E. Smith. Every week he'd have a new piece of eye and ear candy. He had quite a repetoire of licks and axes.

That guy was a deadly guitar player. He always looked like he was high on coke tho...

G.E Smith was also the guitarist for Hall&Oats when they had all the hits..Cool player

not only is G.E. smith the man, but he has a very tasteful collection of classic axes.

I watched some of it. They've shown it several time so far. Will probably show it a few more.

If you missed it, the show is available in limited fashion as a double-DVD set, but only direct from PBS (not in stores). I called and ordered mine right after catching some of the show on PBS (the shipping is $5 or so, so the total is about $35 for two DVDs ... not bad). I have always loved Petty's music, and also his (and Mike Campbell's) taste in guitars!

According to the official info (got this from Petty's Web site ... I'm not affiliated with him or with PBS, by the way, just passing info along for fellow fans):

"Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are re-launching PBS' revered "Soundstage" series with a show the band taped for the network April 20th in Chicago for an intimate audience of 450 fans. In fact Tom and the band played long enough for two shows. Their set included blues, covers, some country, some hits, some tracks deep into their catalogue and three new songs. End result? The "Soundstage" folks requested and got two shows (one hour each). There will be a back-to-back two-part series July 3rd and 10th airing on most stations at 9:00 p.m. Central, and 10:00 p.m. Eastern, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Time.

"On Friday, June 27th, you can get a jump on the rest of America by ordering TOM PETTY and the HEARTBREAKERS' entire "Soundstage" performance -- plus bonus footage -- through PBS by calling: 1-800-237-1100. This Limited Edition two DVD set will cost $29.95 (plus shipping and handling), will not be sold in stores and is available only through PBS. So, if you do not watch the show or want to order now you may order your copy ONLY by calling the above number.

"Meanwhile, remember to tune in July 3rd and 10th to catch the band's "Soundstage" performance, airing on 300 television stations nationwide (check local listings for PBS airtimes)."

was G.E. Smith ever into Cocaine? I remember watching him play a few episodes on SNL and he just looked kinda happily wasted...i'd assume it because he was such a work-aholic.
