Tom mics

Hi guys! I´m planning to upgrade my (little) mic collection... so far, a SM57, a D112 and 2 (old) NT1s.
I use them to record my drums (jazz and fussion mainly, but rock and pop too), and i wanna get some mics for my toms... (12, 13 and 16).
Budget... $150 max. each.
Maybe i should care too about versatiliy since i have just 4 mics...
So far i´m between the sm57 and the senn e604...
Which one sounds closer to the md421? Which should I get?

with jazz i'd say 4 mics is all you need... pick up a nice pair of overheads and you'll be happy... otherwise, for $150, the e609's or beta 57s can rock... md 421's aren't much more than 150 a pop, so why not just save and get the real guys?

AKG C2000B- can be had for $150 or less. Great on toms and hand percussion. Also useful on acoustic guitars, as an overhead, and on dome vocalists. It's a good cheap workhorse mic.-Richie

i really love md421's for toms but they are a hassle to place and you'll need extra mic stands. i personally don't own any md421's anymore but i do have a couple of md422 ("improved" version of the md421) which i really like too. the best thing with md421s is that they instantly sound good on toms (unlike a sm57 which has to be eq-ed like a monkey) and the crosstalk that md421s pick up doesn't sound very ugly like most other mic's i've had on toms. And of course md421's sound nice on a lot of things....

Those sennheiser e604's are a lot better on toms than sm57's. although sm57s do get the job done. the big plus with those e604's are that they don't need any stands and are easier to place. e604's also sound nice on guitar cabs.

i'd say either go for md421's or go for e604's. maybe audition them both and go with the ones you like best.
