Hi.

I'm totally new to this lark. I haven't bought anything to record with yet but intend to do it as cheaply as I can because musically I am inept.

I just want to do it for fun - make a lot of noise and save it. I considered the Tascam MFP-01 as it seems to fit the cheap bill. Is there anywhere I could hear what anyone has done on this machine to get an idea of what to expect?

To fill in the blanks I'm a 37 year old who played drums and crap guitar in various bands as a skinny punk and just want to make a lot of (stereo) noise. At he moment I have an Aria Pro semi-acoustic with a zoom 505 effects box and a 15 watt practice combo. What we in Scotland call a cottage industry.

The usual - full of good ideas but never got around to them and have just decided "why not!".

What kind of music or "noise" do you want to make? What do you intend to make the noise with? Drums? Guitar? Synths?
If you have a capable computer, much can be done with software. Just get a midi controller and you're in business.
But understand, this is not a cheap hobby. You will always have the yearning for new gear, and might possibly become addicted and devote unhealthy amounts of time and money on it, forsaking all else. Now is a good time to give it up unless your willing.:)

Sorry, I was maybe a bit vague with my details - the stuff I want to put down is harmonies I have which involve distorted guitar, bass and minimal drum machine patterns some of which will be replaced with a guitar echo.

Very lo-fi.

This is all very strange to me as I last recorded anything by sitting my mate's ghetto-blaster at one end of a room and the four of us tripping out for up to 30 minutes at a go then falling over.

I dont expect or intend, to make anything clinical. I still have my punk ethic of you don't have to be good at something to have a good time. The "here's three chords - now go make a record" inspiration of Mark Perry.

My computer is probably capable of use but I don't like them. I do have a Pioneer digital audio recorder which I have read could be of use for bouncing stuff back and forth but I just want to see if I can find any mp3s or anything anyone has done with a Tascam MFP-01.

I'm impressed at the response so far. Thanks.
