Today was pay day and I felt like gambling. Now what in the world did I buy?

So I found a mic lot that was part of an estate sale on ebay. 45 bucks for 2 mics and 2 shockmounts. Contacted the seller and he had no idea what the mics were. I got a Samson C01 and the other mic is a bit more intriguing. Some sort of U47 Clone in need of some repair. It says AMI orient LCC on it. Did some research and this is the closest thing I can find: AMI U47 Classic and Modern Kits
This is the actual listing: Condenser Mic Lot Ami Orient Samson | eBay
Hopefully someone can tell me if I just got a solid Neumann/Telefunken knockoff or a good deal on two shock-mounts and a mic.
I'll keep yall updated when the package comes!

Looks like you bought a bunch of dusty garbage cheapo mics from a liquidated estate for cheap. put the package on the curb for the trash when it gets to your house lol

IMHO
The samson is a solid mic. I have used it before and it makes a great external kick mic. I needed some shock-mounts and now I will have 2. Not bad for the price.

I am particularly looking for details on the AMI. It is clearly a Neumann knock off. I am just curious if it sounds like one or not. I have repaired dynamics and condensers in the past. I just want to know if this mic is something worth repairing.

Can't tell if this is a joke or if you're serious.

OP, I think you got a very good deal! You should make a follow up and post some clips!

Thanks CrowsofFritz! I think i will do a shootout of my cheapo LDC's: Cascade M20, Samson C01, and AMI. The winners will get used for room mics/vocal mics. I will also post up some pics of me fixing the broken wires on the AMI mic.

Should be a fun little project for your self.
From what I can remember the AMI is a microphone kit that one purchases and you assemble it.

Yeah the kits I found look real nice. Hope all the parts I need are in there. Is a 30 watt iron safe for a microphone? In the past I have only repaired cheapo mics.

Good idea. I usually just solder cables and joints in instruments. Ill try to find something busted to practice on.

30 watt - just don't keep it on the circuit board to long.

Sweet the mics should arive around Wednesday so I can post up pics and assess the damage then.

Sorry for the delay everyone. I have had a tiring week at work. Anyway here are some pictures :o

I will test these out today hopefully. The F22 has a body where I do not know how to hold it together. It looks nice so I hope not to have to cover it in tape. Does anyone know anything more about this mic or where I could find more info?

My Thoughts on F22

I have learned this mic is basically M20U. This means I now have 3 of them. Perhaps I will mod 1 and sell of the others. Has anyone done the Dorsey mod? Making Mics Better: a Practical DIY Project, by Scott Dorsey. How difficult is it?

From what I see in your picture, it looks like the upper and lower case parts would snugly slip one inside the other. Unless they are the same diameter, then I would think there is a metal ring missing that the two housing pieces fit into and holds them together.

Looks like you connected the wires to the XLR on bottom. If so, you should be able to plug it in to see if it works. Have you tried it?

Also I was wondering, since you say you had 2 and now have 3 of the same type mic, why did you not see what you got, by just comparing to the ones you already had? Or am I missing something?

It should fit however there is a little extra space for whatever reason. The mic is not the same brand as the ones I have however the circuit boards are extremely similar. Often times cheap mics are all manufactured in the same factory and designed quite similarly however they are branded differently. Unfortunately all my XLR cables are at my drummers house so I have yet to test my new mics. I am going there tomorrow and I will give them a try then. Maybe there was some glue holding the casing together. I may try that.

So i tested the mics the samson sounds nice and works completely. I need to find somewhere to attach the ground on the AMI. I also need to figure out how to make it hold together. I would like to correct my self and say that this is actually not a rebranded cascade M20 but actually a MXL 2001. I think this mic would make a good platform for modding and I will leave the samson as is.

I have tested both mics and I have no complaints so far. The AMI needed to be held together in 2 places and one has switches and thus the clamp is not a possibility. Photo on 7-28-13 at 4.01 PM.webp I hear tape can add some nice color to a recording though :laughings:

I also have a 57 that has lost its mesh. Does anyone have any advice for that. I am thinking of gluing on some sort of window screen.
