That Norwegian Bastard
I`m sending tracks to be mastered for the 1st time.
I`m sending it abroad so I have no chance to give feedback as we go.

My concern is the fade outs, I know were I want it to fade out, should I do it myself before delivery or is that a big no, I`m guessing it is:o

Fades are affected by dynamics processing, so these are really thing that have to be done after any compression/limiting stages of the mastering process. For example, a fade that was long and smooth before mastering might end up staying louder for a long time then suddenly tailing off when it drops below the threshold. Send notes with timings of where you want the fades to occur.

What I do is cut the end of the song at the point where I want the fade to end. Then you can just figure out where you want the fade to start and count the seconds.

I've never sent anything to be mastered myself but, from what I've read...if you can create an example CD of what you'd like the final master to resemble, this will help the engineer to get things just how you want. For example:-track order, fade outs, cross fades, gaps between tracks etc. Just make sure you tell the engineer that this is your example CD.

But whatever you do, don't add any fadeouts to the actual tracks you want mastered as this will cause the engineer all sort of problems. Failing all of that, if you just tell him which tracks you want to fade out, you can be pretty sure that he'll know exactly how, where and when to fade out. ;)

Both work. You can make a comp of what you're looking for (expect to possibly save a few buck for doing so if you're paying hourly - It takes a lot of guesswork out) and then (as Jay mentioned) just chop the track where you want the fade to end.
