to direct mic or to connect 4 track to mixer

I have been trying to figure out the best way to record in my home studio. Is it better to place a mic in front of my guitar amp and then input the mic directly into my tascam 4 track recorder or is it better to connect my amp (or just a pedal board) to my mackie mixer and then connect my tascam recorder to the mixer?

Depends on what you need. Basically you're either going to be using the preamps/EQ on the Mackie vs. those on the Tascam. If you like the tone & level you're getting direct to the Tascam, do it that way. If you need additional gain and/or want to tweak the tone on the way in, use the Mackie. With this approach, you'd want to turn the pre's on the Tascam down as low as possible. I'm not too familiar with it, but I'd imagine the pres on the Mackie may be somewhat better so this may be your best approach.

I have been surfing through this wonderful site for two days now and have been learning a lot. With the suggestions given to me, I will use my AKG mic to record my amp and then run the mic into the tascam 4 track. I will also mic the drum and vocal into the 4 track, bypassing my mackie mixer all together. If anyone has any other suggestions, please tell me. Thank you

i have a suggestion.

since you arent using that mackie, why dont you give it to me?

I will keep the mackie, you can NEVER have enough toys, i mean equipment!!!
