i'm in a market for a new channel strip (i mostly need a good preamp and comp for tracking), i'll use it for recording e-guitars, m/f vocals and DI bass for rock/metal/pop styles.. do you think the TLA is a good option? whats your experiences with it?

i would also like to hear it in action.. any sound clips please?

also, how could you compare it with the tampa or the joemeek oneQ?

thank you!

konstantine

(sorry for opening another topic, but i want it to take the attention to the TLA users)

Im not sure of the Ivory , but I had a Crimson channel strip (dont remember the model numbers,3051 maybe?) that I wasnt really that thrilled about. Its been a while ago, so I dont remember that much about it. I just remember that I didnt care for it.
I havent used the tampa or the meek 1Q but I have a VC5 that I find useful from time to time. I might go for the meek first.
For what its worth.

i once borrowed one that was really average . it just smeared everything that went through it. i would recommend the Tampa from all reports.

I'm an avid user of the TL Audio stuff as well as the Tampa and a few Joe Meek models. I'd probably never use the TL Audio gear on vocals unless I was using it as an effect. They sound awesome on drums and as a bass DI though.

The Joe Meek is a great preamp - thicker, darker and rounder than the Tampa.

The Tampa has a great compressor. If you're using compression a lot, go with that one.

hello ryan, do you have any clips of the pres that you have? i would really appreciate it..

how is the compressor on the meek and the tla?

which tla unit you have? and whats that "characther" that you dont like much on vocals? what about guitars, have you tried it for micing an amp?

thank you very much, in advance

For clips, check out a few tracks I've done recently at www.littlekingstudio.com/recording_demo . The TL Audio pres have been used on the snare, kick and toms on all three of those tracks with a pretty standard mic setup.

In the TLA units, the "tube" feature is great on drums or bass, but doesn't have a nice enough slope for vocals. It's possible the tube distortion feature could ruin vocal takes if the singer got a bit too loud. Maybe one of their EQs after a nice compressor would work, but why?

The TLA compressor is nice. It seems to work like an 1176 and sounds great on drums. I think I've got maybe 1-2db working on the snare on a couple of those tracks, but nothing too obvious. Actually, I used TL Audio preamps, eqs and compressors on the overheads of the BORN RUFFIANS track. I'm not thrilled with how it turned out, but it didn't ruin the track. Next time I'd do it differently though.

TL Audio preamps sound nice on guitars because of their limited dynamic range. You can add just a touch of the tube distortion and it's nice.

It's all a matter of taste really. What I hear as improper might sound great to you. Using this stuff will give you your own feelings about it really quickly. Try to rent/borrow this stuff for a weekend when you have some time to mess around with it.

thank you again ryan!

i would appreciate some more info on the joemeek oneq, did you used it in those tracks? how do you feel about the compressor on it? will i work nice with distorted guitars?

i'm more possitive on getting this or a summit audio pre or brick and something like an rnla..

best regards
