What does everyone think about this TL Audio C-1 pre/comp? I have not heard many people on this forum talking about this product. Is it pro quality? Does it perform well on all instruments as a main pre/comp?

I've never used one, but it seems to have it's share of fans from what I gather. Supposedly, it was used on Alanis' Jagged Little Pill, but don't quote me on that one.

I checked out TL Audio's website the other day and thought the C-1 looked like somthing I could definately use. Just wanted to check with people on this forum before I decide to purchase one.
I need a good all in one tracking unit. Hopefully I will get one soon. Thanks for the replys cheesrock and dot.

Tl audio gear doen's get the respect it deserves at all round here. I own the ivory 4-channel preamp, the 8channel grey buffer amp and the EQ 2, and would recommend any TL audio gear.

The eq 2 has the same pre, and out put circuits and it sounds superb. i'm actually on the lookout for a C1.

toby.I.,

I own a PA-1 and think it's great. I'm shopping for an eq in the EQ-2 price range and it looks like a good set of features. I already know the quality of the TL/HHB Classic series. Also considering the Expounder for a little more.

So tell me, if you wouldn't mind, about the EQ-2:

How would you descibe its tonal qualities? clean, transparent? colored?

Have you tried it on mastering or 2 bus applications?

Is it easy to interface with other gear at tracking time?

Any phaseiness?

Can you easily bypass the preamps?

Thanks!

where to start! i've only had it about a month.

tonally its amazing. it has a valve stage in each of the band gains, so for example if your going for that effect you can push the bass, or mid into satuation and keep the rest of the spectrum clean. for something that is has 6 valve stages per channel ( a pultec only has four) it is really clean though. probally cos it doesnn't have transformers in the signal path.

overall its pretty transparent until you start to push the gains a bit.

I intend to use it as a mix bus EQ, but haven't had a chance yet. i have no doubt it will excel at it.

when tracking it has an instrument in on the front, mic in, separate balanced and unbalanced line in (bypassing the pre), and balanced and unbalanced line out. really versatile. and a master out control as well.

the only slighly wierd thing about it is that is has four fully parametric bands per channel, and instead of shelfs if has sweepable filters. i think this is great maybe not to somepeoples taste.

toby.I.,

Thanks for all the info!

That's a really cool feature to be able to drive a particular band with some saturation while keeping the others clean or somewhere in between.

Looking at the manual it appears that the hi and low frequency bands do have the option to operate in shelving mode or parametric mode, correct?
Or were you referring to something else?

possibly, i'll have a look. i have the grey seris one, and they did make a few changes between that and the blue one.

I own a TL Audio Ivory series compressor 5021 ...I think,,.
Not overly impressed..Not sure if the comp circuit in the C1 is similar...The one I've got distorts very ugly...no subtle distortion, just goes into the crappy stage right away...but I found a good use for it ..bass...and that's enough , coz I bought the unit for next to nothing....so yeah, my experience with TL is not too exciting

cheers
