What I have:

Shure Sm57
StudioProjects VTB1 (v series)
Delta 1010
Cooledit Pro 2.0

Lets start if off like this, the VTB1 has a level meter, now, do I want to get my volume on my amp and my mic placement in such a state so that the max volume stays in the green? Or do I want yellow? (green ranges from -20 to 0, while yellow is +8).

Next, what exactly does my output level do. If I get my the meter on my preamp to read favorably, do I need to boost the output signal?

Anything is helpful, thanks

I'm not sure how does the VBT-1 works, but for my VC3Q, I try to get the input signal LED to ocassional red without distortion. Then I adjust the output of my micpre to a level that my soundcard can take it. (no clipping)

A common rule is to record as hot as possible. :)

my pathetic Malaysian Ringgit $.02

Thanks for the info, The VTB1 has 3 knobs, one for input gain, tube blend, and then output level. I'll keep the hot as possible in mind.
