I am looking for advice on how to get more low end punch out of my kick drum on a recording. I am useing a sm57 on a yamaha 22in.stage custom kick with a evens head on the beater head, and an evens head with a 3in. hole on the front. One outher problem I have is that I only have 2 tracks on my adat that I can use for the drums so I have to mix the kit befor recording. Any tips would be verv appreciated. thanks kole

You need a good kick mic to get that low-end..... try an AKG D112 or search this forum for many other recommendations.

Bruce is right, an AKG D112 is going to be best for getting the kick sound youre looking for... the d112's are killer..

kick drum mics

Thanks for the advice, but I just spent $2000 on PA gear last month and my wife would kill me if I spent another $200,I gess I cant have my cake and eat it to. However I did use a friends cad drum mics this weaked and that made a big difference,at least it sounded good untill my mixing board took a BIG CRAP during playback.Well you cant win them all, anyone want to buy a broken studio 24.

You can try moving the mic back from the head a bit to give the lows a little distance to develop, also even though the 57 goes down to 40 hz, the SM58 doesnt roll off as sharply below 100 hz so it gives you a rounder low end with more 60-100 hz in it, try one instead as a quick fix.
