Timing question

Hey,

Not really into hip-hop/rap but had a question regarding some that I've listened to, since I'm a drummer. Forgive me as I'm a bit of an oldy, but the more new stuff I hear, it sounds like the lyrics are always a little behind the 'pocket' of the beat. I'm just wondering if that's intentional and if it is, is it a technique the artist practices or is it done in post production by shifting the vocal track behind slightly?

i dont know what to tell you..i dont rap..but from alot of guys that i record..they say alot of time they rap off the snare hits..

It's probably just my ears. I'm really tuned to how precise some beats fall together. It's not just rap, but some R&B too. I notice Beyonce does it alot. Hmm...

It's kinda cool really...

That is the way it is performed since the time of Socka-Dance-Hall,(Jamaica), which was the style setting up that type of singing.They use the odd timing of the beat.Gerry Zaragemca.
