Hey dudes, let me know what you think of the audio mix I did in this, I have some ideas about what's wrong with it but i won't say till i see what others think.

Vocals recorded on an Se Electronics 2200 A
Guitar recorded with internal semi-acoustic mic
(would have been better with an additional sound-hole mic setup, but we had time restrictions)
Both straight into a Digi 003 rack connected via firewire.

Let me know what you guys think.

^^^Posted the video for you.

I really like the song. The vocals sounds great to me. The guitar doesn't sound too bad for being a DI'd acoustic but the hand slap on the strings? It might work in a live environment for a touch of percussion but it doesn't work in a recording for me. (I do this same thing with some songs live) You could try EQ'ing just those parts and dropping the bass out of them a touch so they're not so harsh.

Good song and performance though. :thumbs up:

Awesome! Cheers for doing that dude.

Yeah, good point about the slap. I may have pushed the lows on that guitar track up a little too much!

Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you like the song, the guy is super talented and I want to do his recordings justice.

Agree with Mr. Clean.

You might want to try to record the acoustic guitar with the same mic that you used for the vocal. The vocal sounds good, but the acoustic, not as much. I'd bet it would sound better if it was mic'd.

Awesome song, awesome performance. Agree with the comments on the guitar. Well done man!!

Yep, good stuff, nothing much to add here... and you knew what the weakness was when you posted it. Get something like Reaper and start tracking (with your nice mic)...

Also, don't be afraid to EQ the shit out of an acoustic guitar.

OMMMMG I wish I could play like that!! maybe you could help me out by teaching me? :D:D:D

Thanks Tobe, appreciate it, yeah you're right it's insane how many different tones you can get out of a solid acoustic recording with some heavy EQ. Haha illseez, unfortunately i'm just the engineer so i couldn't teach you a thing about how to play like Jaiden.

The guitar slaps are irritating - the way they pop out of both channels and a little too bassy to boot.
the vocals aren't bad at all - I'm listening on Sennheizer HD 515 can at present. The does seem, to me, to be some shrillness in the top end of the voice though.
It could be YouTube compression etc or not.
It's usually better to upload somewhere other than Utub as the visuals can dstract from what you're asking for - that is a critique of the mix and the recording in general.
Beyond that Utub does mangle quite a bit as does the process of combining audio & video.
A touch of John Butler in the performance and sytle but he's been pervasive in his influence downunder.

Yeah definitely rayc. I will review my next vocal eq process, youtube does mess with high frequencies and mangle things with data compression but it probably needs some attenuation.

I'm glad I know about the slap now though, it sounded and felt organic to me at the time of mixdown but I will avoid any processing that accentuates It in future especially with a DI input.

I was assuming the video link wouldn't provide ideal audio for a review of this, but it sure seemed loud and clear to me, so well done there.

I agree with others on the hand slap thing. The performance is good and you've capture it well. There is for me maybe just a touch of harshness in the highs of both the guitar and voice, but then I tend to gravitate towards darker, warmer tones I guess. I like the room/verb or whatever it is that provides the space around the vocals...very natural sounding. Had the guitar been mic'd, with that same spacial quality to it, I think it'd sound even better.

I have very little experience mixing just a guitar and voice, but it's always interesting to me how many different ways you can approach it, even just having two things like this. In some ways it's probably easier, but with no way to hide anything like you can in a full mix, it's probably harder in some ways as well. You did well here.

Thanks heatmiser , appreciate the feedback. Those highs definitely need attenuating if we're going to put this on a record you're right that they are a little too present.

I try to really tune my reverbs, I love natural sounding but still big verbs, 70s psychedelic and rock recordings with natural hall and church recorded vocal takes are good reference for real sounding verb.but next time def gonna mic the guitar too. Thanks again man.
