OK recording gurus...I'm a couple months into this digital recording thing and have a light latin/jazz tune posted on mp3.com. The tune was recorded using PowerTracks 5.0 (PT Music's $30 wonder) and a Dman 2044 sound card.

I have no monitors to speak of so comments on the mix would be much appreciated...actually any comments are appreciated, notwithstanding hate mail!!

A swing/jazz tune will be posted in the next day or two. Thanks people.

Yeah! I loved that tune. Passed the Marilyn test in two areas. I wanted to produce an acoustic rhythm track AND an electric lead track.
However your recording was ~4.5 dB shy of filling in the available dynamic range. I redid it in Sound Forge by manually & gently softening the few "wild" peaks by 0.5 to 1.5 dB with the volume adjustment applied only to the half-wave between where the amplitude crosses the "0" line, goes too high (or low) and returns to "0" dB. Then applying a normalization. If you'd like, I'll post the
redo at my site and you can use it for your mp3.com sample. The remix goes right up to 0 dB, but retains the dynamics of the original.

Thanks a ton drstrawl...would love to hear the improved version.

For future reference, what should I have done differently?

Simply normalize your file! Your mix could aim for a few dB more, but it's easier to get it within <3 dB and let the computer expand it. The remix has been posted under:

Of course, the modifications to this file would work better if performed on the original .wav files instead of the .mp3 file.

Other steps that could be taken up front would be to add some light compression to squeeze a little more thump out of the mix.
Best done as needed on the individual tracks.
