These were recorded in a little project studio. "Flutter" was quasi-mastered there, also. The other two tunes were mastered at a somewhat larger studio by a more experienced engineer with better equipment, but still not a mastering house.

I wrote "Sun Anthem" and "Tune To the Moon". Flutter was written by Tom Bell, though I developed (and play) the lead gutiar part.

I'd like feedback on recording, mixing, mastering (such as it is), and/or the songs and performances, as well.

They are on nowhereradio.com by timeZarrow, but the easiest way to get to them is my band's website:

I’m listening on small computer speakers so take that into consideration. I don’t mean to entirely rip your recording, this is just what I hear.

I’m not really sure where to start…I don’t hear much low end on any of the songs, is there a bass guitar? I like the guitar tone on flutter, reminds me of the Greatful Dead. Something very strange happens at roughly 3:11 in flutter, an awkward pan of the lead guitar and apparent volume changes.

Drums sound like they are there sometimes and sometimes they are not. At times the snare seems far away, the cymbals cut through but sound a bit harsh to me. The toms are somewhere in between and seem to rumble.

I can hardly hear the vocals on the songs which have vocal parts.

I would say that the mastering could be improved, overall volume level was pretty low and consistency between songs was missing.

I listened to Sun Anthem.

Kind of a long, rambling intro. Needs a few different lyrics.

The guitar track could have been a bit tighter in spots. I thought it needed a bit more warmth and little less midrange. Some of the slide work was cool.

The mix in general could use some more low end.

The drums a bit of a live sound.

Some pitch issues and wavering on some of the vox. They get covered by the drums and guitar in spots. Interesting voice though - kind of Bowie-ish.

Suns Anthem - Cool guitar sound, kind of like Sonic Youth, and the vocals remind me of Morrisey. Could the guitar be a little out of tune? Sounds like you may be a little in love with the sound as the instrumental part kind of wore out its welcome. Is that a live recording? You may fare better by laying down parts individually, concentrating on tracking.

Tune to the Moon - The right channel seems to dominate with the acoustic strumming. Very retro sound. I like the sound generally but the vocal seems spotty and too loose.

Overall you guys have a unique sound drawing from some cool influences. I look forward to hearing more of your stuff.

LOL... you direct linked to your songs on NWR using your own website.

Me thinks that your account won't be active very long.

Tune To The Moon

Recording I think it is pretty clean and clear. As everyone else said, i believe you need more some low end round out that sound. Also the vocals sound a bit harsh, maybe some reverb and eq tweaking. I think that the music playing wise was a little sloppy. The rhythm wasn't that steady and the vocals were shaky. The style of music is not my favorite and I am not familiar with it so what I'm saying might be complete nonsense. I did like the song as a whole it has a cool groove and feel to it. Good work.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Most of the criticisms fall in with my own. The one on the bass, I'm not so sure of, except for maybe "Flutter". The two newer ones seem to have lots of bass on the systems I listen to them on, but then I usually listen to the cd's and not the mp3, and either in the car or on the home theater system. The bass tone could be an issue.

I hope Waldo is right about my connection to NoWhere via the website. The guy who does my site set that up. Is the problem WATYF referred to an issue for the website or NoWhereRadio? I am definitely a newbie in regard to those issues, and haven't spent a lot of time going over the rules.

Sun Anthem, we had already decided, is too long. When we do it live, we are not repeating the second verse at the end, and I am thinking about eliminating one of the repetitions in the middle section, also. The guitar was supposed to be a scratch track to get the drums done, but we ended up keeping it because we liked the phasy/flangy sound of it. Unfortunately, I had brain-lock during recording and didn't manage to tune up the guitar immediately beforehand - it's a little sharp and not entirely in tune with itself, which shows up on the high arpeggios. I made a bad decision to keep working with it even after I realized it wasn't to concert pitch. Do over!

On Tune to the Moon, the 12-string was supposed to be a scratch track, but somehow, with gaps between recording sessions and some band line-up changes, we forgot to go back and do it again. It's an acoustic-electric and we didn't mic it for the (supposed scratch) track, and were upbraided by the mastering engineer for that offence. The background vocal timing is loose, also. This one, I think we can salvage with new 12-string and backing vocal tracks.

You guys are really bringing out some good points. I'll be switching out at least one of these tunes soon, and Ill post to get your opinions. In the meantime, anyone else's response is welcome!

:)

Whoo!

I was a little worried there! I do seem to remember now a discussion about that type of service and deciding it was a good idea to link to it rather than trying to get our website to accomodate the music. Thanks Waldo! I think it was also the positive feedback on this board that caused me to try nowhereradio. So far, it's working well for us!

Now, if I can just get myself to be more exacting at tracking time . . .;)
