I own the direct pro 24/96 and have been happy with it. For awhile I've been looking at the Q10 because it's the logical step up from the 24/96, but I would like to know before I go out and spend $800 that the Q10 is a better choice then the delta 1010.
I like the Q10 over the 1010 because of the headphone and moniter outs and preamps, if I get the 1010 will I be able to monitor what I'm recording while I'm recording like I can with the Q10?
And if I get the 1010 I'll probably have to get a mixer, I've never used a mixer when recording (went straight from a portastudio to the 24/96) will learning to record with a mixer take long to learn?
Will the preamps on a modest mackie mixer compete with those on the Q10? Or can I get one of those dandy 8 channel presonus pre-amps and be okay without a mixer?
Can anyone using one of those interfaces tell me specific things one has over the other. Thanks very much for any help.
I am using cool edit pro If that helps too.

To me, you just answered your own question. You have never used a board so, yes it could take a bit of time to learn them. Also, I think the Q10 does have a great deal more options than a 10/10, not to mention preamps.

If money is the issue, then once again the q10 is the obvious choice. Delta 1010 + Mixer = More money spent than a Q10. I can tell you from experience that the pre's are better and cleaner than a Behringer or Mackie board. So to get a better sound you'll have to use an outboard pre or at least a Soundcraft.

Do yourself a favor and just get the Q10. When you decide to get better outboard pre's just go into the 1/4" jack of the Q10 and bypass the Aardvark's pres. I hope I have set you straight :)

I own a Q10 and am planning on getting another one, It is awesome.

My buddy has a 1010 in his studio, he likes that also.

I chose the Q10 because I do not have a mixer!
The q10 also has preamps on it as well, very easy to use and route signals from the back. I use both the monitor and headphones outputs for tracking and mixing, very versatile.

If you have a mixer then you could use both. If you dont then you will need one with the 1010.

IMO the q10 is a better piece of equipment with its preamps.

NOTE it does have these EFR switch for inputs 7 & 8 for guitars, but I just mic my amps and use the XLR jacks. I have not found much use for the EFR setting (maybe others have and can comment I would like to hear some suggestions)

The Q10 sounds very clean (to me) and was like moving from a pinto to a rolls royce from my SB card. lol...

If you have any specific questions let me know.

Hope this helps,
Larry

Heat

The only critique I heard of the Aardvark is that the PCI card gets pretty hot.

I use a C-Port with a mixer, but I remember hearing all sorts of driver problems with the Q-10 - that's one of the reasons I went the C-Port route. I'd make sure those problems were all taken care of (or won't affect you) before you plop down the cash.
