Thoughts on Studio Projects T3?

I've been looking around for a budget tube mic and some of the mics I've been considering are :-

Apex 460
MXL v69

I've recently been given the opportunity to buy a Studio Projects T3 secondhand for less than what either of these would cost new.

How does the Studio Projects T3 compare to either of these mics?
 
I find that with a retube, this is one of the most wonderful mics, priced well below the comparable omni,8,straight, mics. really a good mic at a great price.
 
I have one with a new GE 5 star 6072 tube and I am very happy with mine.
very versatile.
If you can get one for less than the v69 it is a no brainer....

i paid about $500 for mine.
Being multi patterned is excellent.

Like mine a lot. I just wish I had an interface good enough to capture the sound as I hear it through the mixer when tracking.

I use mine for vocals and acoustic guitar.
 
Bought my T-3 used under $300, put in a GE 5 star 6072 and it is a real winner. Great mic. I noticed one for sale over at GS for under $500. If the Apex 460 is the same mic as the ACM 1200, which I have, go with the T-3. Now I might add that I have done the mods for the 1200 with Oliver's custom transformer and new tube making the 1200 much nicer than stock, but to be honest, have not compared them side by side since the mods.

I've auditioned a T-3, and I liked it. I think it's one of the reliably best mics in the Studio Projects line. And it apparently takes well to modding. I'd go for it. -Richie
 
Brent Casey at SP advocates putting a Cinemag trannie in place of the standard and I recall him telling me that he'd been playing with different tubes and he'd found one other than the GE6072 which he liked a lot. Unfortunately, these conversations were a couple if years ago and I can't remember specific details.............maybe if you email Brent he can help.

Oktava MK-319
Rode NT-1a
MXL v67g
Studio Projects B1

I also have a Focusrite ISA One preamp and am looking to pick up either a Grace M101, True Systems P-Solo or Audient Mico at a later date.

I've always fancied having a tube mic because so many of the big studios I've worked in use a tube mic for lead vocals. Thing is, tube mics can be noisier than some solid state mics and I really like clean and intimate vocals.

The ISA One has been brilliant because it is extremely quiet and has stacks of gain!
 
...I have had (past tense) most of the affordable tube mics costing less than $1000...the T3 is a keeper...eats the MXL V69 and the Apex 460 (IMHO)...holds it's own against my (more expensive) Rode K2 and Mojave MA-200...if you can get one for $300 or less, grab it!...throw a quality 6072 tube in it and you're good to go...smooth and versatile for a chinese tube mic...built by 797Audio who make some of the best microphone capsules in China...there's good reason why Alan Hyatt chooses 797Audio to build Studio Projects mics...;)
