Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum but have been trying to get a home studio going for a while, I used to DJ way back in 92-00, then had to stop because of work which blocked my weekend Dj gigs. Years later, I'm getting back into it but also looking to get a home studio going. My main interests is gonna be a hip-hop based studio so now am faced on which vocal mic to get. In some on-line reviews as well as magazines, the Studio Projects C3 mic came up, which goes for about $300. I wanted to turn to some forums before I made a purchase on mics, which I'm not quite familiar. As with my studio equipment, its building up little by little, but gettin there. So any input regarding the Studio Projects C3 mic for vocals is appreciated or any other recommendations for a mic in the 300-400 price range. Thanks for ur help and I'll keep u guys updated.

I have never used the C3, but I did have a B1 and a C1, both of which are great beginner mics. The C1 was much better for vocals than the B1 but that is expected....just as Id expect the C3 would be better as well.....however, in the price range that you said you have, I would recommend either an AT4040 or a used AT4050, or something that I find a little more versitle like a Shure SM7

and Id plan to spend a couple hundred on a preamp to if that isn't in your budget yet....

the C3 is just a multi pattern C1, it'll sound slightly different due to the design with 2 capsule (most mic with multi patter will require 2 capsule I believe).

So if you only need the cardioid pattern, then just get the C1 and save money.

I think the T3 is recommended more over the C1/C3... I have no experience with these so I have no idea if they're good or not.

I have a C3 and have used it for acoustic group recordings, like a bluegrass band doing choreography around a mic. I love the mic and as an all around large diaphragm, it rocks. I also have a pair of B1s that have done yeoman duty; I can use them on almost anything and make it work. They are very neutral mics. I'm a fan.

I have the LSD2 which is basically 2 C3s stacked ontop of one another -- its a great mic!!!

Rode NT2A (or NTK if tyou can find a used one)
SP T3 (C1 is okay if you can find an old one without the roll offs)
Shure SM7 (maybe the best choice)
EV RE 20 (or the cheaper??20)
There is a Neumann stage condenser that sounds great in the studio too, 105
On the cheap... CAD M179

i started off with the c3 and a shure SM58, and i still them regularly.

back to the C3 though, its 2 years old now and still looks new, no notable damage at all and most importantly it still sounds awesome.

i record mostly hiphop vocals, but ive done metal, male and female singers and it is def possible to acheive an awesome sound with a decent preamp.

i have also used a rode Nt1a which are similar in quality to the C3 but sound completly different at the same time. around the same price as the C3

the C3 wont disapoint though, i have yet to put it through some more powerful equipment, but i have been happy with its sound through the various setups ive used it in.

good luck with the mic search
