I was wondering... I have a professinal quality HIFI VCR, a monster of a computer w/ 2 sound cards, ur various ccompressor, eq, adio editing s/w, and a 4 track. While atempting to play some tool, i had a brainstorm:
I could use the 4-track as a mixer(its been done before, it has a real nice setup mixer-wise but wreeks as sound goes... and then dump it into my soundblaster live! via a/d-d/a conversion(i ripped my hair out when heared the quality of anolog, so i got 2 black boxes and use the S/PDIF's) for real time effects (i luv those) next, put it on to hifi tape to serve as a single master. the reason is: a buddy of mine made this little device that plugs into an all but worthless isa slot and turns a mono signal into two signals 1 has hlaf of the data digital empisized a a certin way with a seceond signal over that(more on that later) 2 has the same thing, but does the other side of the signal. put these two together and U hear a dbl mono signal that is the same but, the card recognizes this as 48000hz 18bit mono quality sound.... it makes a HIFI VCR a v-dat that has only one channel. perrty neat huh? the catch is on tape 4/5 of time there is lost synch in the signals so the card falls back on what it gets from the sub carrier(that "phantom signal i lold u about earlier.) and the quality is slightly worse than directing it on the medieum ie.. a tpae will sound like its been done on the wrong type, and not erased ect. a vcr will sound like it wass recorded slp on an old tape that didn't get erased. If i use the vcr though, the monitor of the encoder/decoder card reports almost no "bit type / CRC data line int faliure"'s (billy's big word meanig that ur two signals don't synch up and u are on fall-back mode.
Preety neat huh? BTW, my modle is not for sale, bill is not takeing orders at this time(he is donig extensive reworking on the device email me at john__muarry@email.com if u want more in depth details on how this thing works billy is more than happy share ideas with anyone who can provide help or comments on the thing.).
im stuck after hear.. i don't know wether to send it to the 4-track to well... 4track or what....
