Anybody ever use one? Any comments? They're pretty small & cheap. I was originally going to buy a little Audio Buddy because I need one more (non-critical) channel, but the 36V phantom power deal kind of turned me off, even if it's not a big deal in every case.

Do the little Rolls mini preamps (MP13 I think) supply a full 48V, and are they usable?

Any comments in general are welcome.

...and here I was going to quit posting before I stick my foot in my mouth again.

I used those Rolls preamps once in a band I was in to record a little demo on MiniDisc. I couldn't complain about the quality, but their reputation isn't very good I think. I'm pretty sure they advertise 48v phantom power.

I just happened to spot this on ebay today:

There was an actual preamp too that was going for like $26, but I couldn't find it again. Maybe it closed already.

Thanks. Yeah that preamp on ebay was what triggered this thread. I suddenly remembered seeing the little things at the music store for like $50 and thought maybe it'd work for what I need to do but...

Welp :)

hey slack,
one of these little rolls was my first "preamp" and i cant complain one bit for the price of these little things. They provided no added hiss or distortion and seemed transparent enough when i used a tlm-103 with mine. im not sure why they get such a bad rep when ive heard $300 preamps that sounded much worse. This little 50 dollar pre is a decent workhorse in my opinion.

Had one but it was very noisy so I returned it for one of the MX602A mixers. Noise was much less and the price about the same. I only needed a mixer for combining my 3 sound cards into a monitor mix.

I would not use the MX602A however going into my sound cards however, I use a Spirit mixer which is cleaner sounding overall.

damn... over a year later, and i'm FINALLY getting to use this MP13 in a studio setting... It's *niiiice*. recorded an acoustic guitar with a SM57 through it, gain set at the little indent notch, and tracked it down on the TAC Scorpion/Otari MX 5050MKIII rig, and it was BEAUTIFUL!

If the difference is this good with this cheap little thing, I can't wait till i get a higher quality pre, like the DMP3!
