for recording would you suggest:

-P3 or P4 or Atholon or What?
-ME or XPhome or XPpro or 2000pro or What?
-this soundcard, or that one, or what?

-and if you guys got anymore you'd like to add to this list..please do - i'm in dire need of a new computer - and want to get the bare minimum, while still keeping it good for recording!

Well, from what (little) I know, the P4's and the Athalons are roughly equivilent these days. AMD stuff used to be much worse than Intel for audio, but they have changed their evil ways.

ME has some serious problems- won't take more than 256M of memory, if I remember correctly. Its also a little buggy and tends to crash when I use my audio stuff. I ditched it in favor of XP Home.

No real difference between XP Home and Pro as far as audio is concerned. Pro lets you use multiple processors and has some fancier network stuff, but that has little to do with audio.

All of those OS require some serious tweaking to get working really well with audio.

Soundcards, eh? You can go a couple ways. Chose which sound card you like and built your system around that. Or chose which system you like and chose your soundcard to fit it. You have a pretty cool opportunity to build a rock solid system by designing it for audio from the ground up.

I can't help ya too much more than that, though.
