but if I were to go into a semi professional studio and since they have rack mounted effect units and I dont. how would I go about using these rack effects? you plug a cable into the out of the effect box and then into the insert channel on that input.
 
If you can into my semi professional studio I would be there to cover you in all the technical stuff.
 
Most outboard units are routed through a patch bay as are the inserts and aux sends/returns of whatever console is being used. That's most likely where the routing would happen.
 
It would depend on the effect. You would use an insert or an effects send. But there would be someone at the studio to show you how it's all hooked up. There is no standard way a patchbay is set up, so someone who works there would have to show you where everything is.
