I'm not getting into the build quality of the thing...its just not designed to do it, y'know? Your RS demag unit, if its the one I'm thinking of, is actually totally up to the task...it may be ancient, but it is in a completely separate class than the unit that is the subject of this thread.
Regarding the lame unit pictured above, I learned of its lameness first-hand. I originally bought it to degauss my 424mkII...yes...that is all I had at one point...

...anyway, when I got the 58 I think the lame one actually caused more problems that ultimately took
extensive degaussing with the Han-D-Mag to resolve...you remember that, AK? The clicketies?

I later tested the lame one on a mildly magnetized philips screwdriver...by mildly magnetized I mean it would pick up very small screws...after the lame degausser treatment? It wouldn't pick them up, but it would still attract them. That was the moment I said "forget it" and ordered the Han-D-Mag. When I got it I did the same test with an even more highly magnetized screwdriver and after degaussing with the Han-D-Mag the screwdriver wouldn't even get the attention of extremely thin shim stock...I knew it was different right away when the Han-D-Mag would start humming like crazy when it got near metal, and nearly picked the screwdriver up!

You pretty much can hardly ever tell that the lame one is on and doing anything. So there ya go...
Anyway, I keep the lame one for the 424 and my other cassette decks...its just handy to have in the house, but the people selling the lame one are just doing a total disservice by picturing with that Teac open-reel deck y'know?
