Ok. So I have a pretty big basement...if it were compared to a small commercial studio it would equal about 2 rooms:control and live. I have no walls though and cant build wals due to the stair case...But I have a crazy idea and i want too see if anybody thinks it will work. for the live room right now it is filled with a bunch of boxes with a lot of junk in each...Do you think if I take the boxes and contruct a room out of them and put blankets on them, it will isolate the drums much?? I do have enough to go fro mthe ground to the ceiling. My spring break is this week, and I'd love to construct a room if i could. The thing about boxes it that I can shape the room with them...any feedback?

if you're trying to make it so you can not hear the drums from the controll room, or even lower the sound considerably, I don't think boxes will do much at all, and blankets will only provide a little high freq. absorbtion. Sound proofing is not easily accomplished and it would have to be constructed with a lot more than boxes.

If i was you, i would do it. It sounds fun and it would give you something to do during spring break

There's always a way to build walls. My basement was hell, thank you floor drains.

Ceilings can be the hardest in a basement though, with pipes and such, I say take the time and throw up some walls, you will be glad you did.

How did your place turn out in the end? Any finished photos of it? I watched with baited breath as you endured to get it finished.

I must say... I'm going to take your idea and use it in my basement. I have multiple wooden work benches stacked with boxes of stuff that I can move and what not to make a nice 10X10X10 room for Vocals and maybe guitar. I might be able to make another room as well for drum recording.

I'm probably going to buy 16-20 of those heavy dutey moving blankets and use those to cover the boxes and make "walls" to separate the rooms.

I know this won't mute the sound and everything, but it will definatly help with sound treatment for me, and organization, instead of this ugly, cluttered basement.

I'll probably do this sometime in the next few months (with summer coming up and what not). If I remember, I'll post pictures of how it turned out and what not.

Thank you... so much... for this idea.

EDIT: My basement has concrete floors and walls, so this solution is almost perfect for it's price. I'll most likely be padding the floors of the two "rooms" with these blankets.

Yes...The moving blanekts is what I am using too. It so nice to be able to put clutter to use. It definatly helps with organization and a little bit of sound treatment. Not soundproof, but its nice.
