Wow, it is truly nice to hear some actual and well-played jazz here... rare and special. Thank you thank you thank you!

That said, it sounds like you threw up a couple of mics and hit record. Everything sounds a bit indistinct. Perhaps if there was a little more effort made in mic placement, everything would be clearer. (Or perhaps it's just the encoding that took some sparkle off the sound?)

Still, it's a good performance and nothing is truly obscured...

Cool stuff Whoopy, but there is more room sound than I'd like to hear. Did you do any spot micing? If so, you may need to bring those tracks into the mix more. :)

Yeah, it's definitely a quick-and-dirty recording. The bass player is moving to Ann Arbor (7 hours away) and he wanted to do this, so he cameback for a couple of days to move some of his stuff, and we had a total of four hours to set up and get all our takes. It's a small room, so everybody was pretty close to each other, and there was a lot of bleed. You can pretty much hear everything in the bass mic. I think that's where a lot of the room tone comes from. I'm not wild about it either, but I think it's a pretty enjoyable recording in spite of it. If I'd had more than four tracks available going into my PC, I probably could've done better. But I figured a minimalist recording would work for these guys.

It's pretty cool. The band is great. The lo-fi gives it a nice cohesiveness, just enough stereo to tease you. Nice job considering the circumstances.

I'm going to be a bit negative about the music and say the bass player got stuck in a rut and was extremely repetitive. And the sax solos were disjointed and the phrases were just quickie riffs that left me wanting much longer phrases in the end.

That being said however, the best part is how the two saxes did play well together.

Definetly dig it.The mix sounds good too.Comes off just like what it is,a live session.

Ha, man I love this. I was nodding my head the whole time. Anyways, I'm not the biggest jazz fan, but the drums sound good for the style. Crazy bass and brass instruments.

I think ya did a fine job of gettin em covered. Some of the sections sound as good as some live at Montreuix cuts that I got on lp. The drums are the only thing that get a little too hot some points. Real nice.

Thanks, all. The drums are a tad loud on this cut, mainly because the drummer played harder on this one than any of the others. Mixmkr might have preferred one of the other cuts to this one, as the bass player did more walking type stuff on the others. This tune was written by the bass player and was all about the riff that he plays over and over. So that's why he sticks to it.

I think you are fortunate to be able to be involved with talanted people. I really liked what I heard, and realize that I probably came off sounding harsher than how I feel in comparison about the music. Surrounding yourself with good talant is the only way to go, imo.

yeah..post some other stuff if you have the time.

I really liked this....has a feel to it that I can't describe. I felt like I was right in there. There's an album called Jazz at the pawn shop, that is awesome. This has that feel to it i thought. I agree with mixmkr, must be nice to work with such talent!!

Ya, good stuff...reminds me of a few jams I used to have with a few guys in the jazz band back in my college days. Relly good stuff and well recorded I thought.

Good stuff!

I dig the live, roomy sound. It's a bit strident in places (especially on the crashes) but overall pretty cool. Not bad for quick-n-dirty.

This one's a keeper. Thanks for puttin' it up, dude!:)

Since I don't have that much NowhereRadio space, I'm taking this one down so I can put up a new one for y'all. I'm starting a new thread about it. Thanks to everyone who listened.

Man,

Pass me that herbal jazz cigarette.

COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL !

Sean:cool:

This was a true to form Jazz tune. Its nice to hear some real Jazz instead of the fake stuff I try to do. The recording and mix fits the song well. Sounds like Jazz hour on college radio.
Good work and loved the bass.
