Okay, I can't believe that I posted this before without a link. Here is the original post with link included:

Hey everyone, I've just finished recording this song and I wanted to get your opinions of the first mix. The song is called 'This Hotel Room.' You can download or hear streaming audio at:

My friend in Belgium is going to put down a guitar solo between the 2nd and 3rd verses, as well as some bits to fill in other parts of the song. But none of that has been recorded yet, so just let me know how the mix of vocals and acoustic sound.

Thanks, Peter

Hey there............

Very introspective songwriting.
Your voice kind of makes me think of a young James Taylor.
I think as the song is..........it's almost boring, maybe needs an interesting bridge in there somewhere.
Great Start though, keep up the good work.

Yeah, I was (and am) a little worried about that. The guitar solo will help that once it's recorded, and I also plan to add little bits of the same guitar into the shorter interludes between verses.

I'm torn...I like the song structurally and don't want to add anything or take anything out. But it doesn't really hit the way I want it to.

How is the mix?

Peter

The mix is really good for what it is (Guitar/Vocal).

I think some harmonies on the vocals would bring this to life and make it more interesting.A guitar solo might give it some oomph but Im not sure......it needs something quicker like way before the halfway mark to give it a kick.

Plenty of songs have been wrote in this structure and they do work.It just takes a KILLER vocal take....try stretching your vocal and hitting some high energy notes instead of the same old feeling from beginning to end.......you need to create some peaks to compliment the valleys in the vocal.

You need more emotion to get your message across in this type of song.

My comments are from a creative standpoint,so if you are completely happy with the song just disregard everything I said.

You have a really good voice and that's hard to find these days.

Are you gonna leave this as an acoustic vocal type thing?

It's one track from an album I'm working on right now. Most of the album is acoustic and vocals, though not all as slow as this one. Not sure what to do. I played around with other instruments behind it and they all sounded really out of place. It feels to me like it's supposed to be a sort of lonely and empty song...

I guess I'll have to re-post once I get the electric guitar worked into it, and perhaps that will liven it up enough while maintaining the style I want.

Still, thanks for the response and keep them coming.

Peter

I'm digging this. Actually I don't think I hear enough singer/songwriter stuff. To pull this off it takes a good voice and a good guitarist and I like both here.

I'm in the camp where I don't know if a guitar solo in the middle is the answer. If you think it needs a break (and I ALWAYS think this about MY songs much to the dismay of some of my friends), I might try a bridge with some background vocals to add a bit of upwards energy....

But, hey - I like the song as it stands very much.....

This is a real nice song....in my mind as I listen to it I can imagine a female voice in the background and a single violin playing down low

I wasn't sure what I would put in the bridge either, but I showed my friend (who is a much better lead guitarist than I am) the song and he started playing over it, it sounded perfect.

Only problem is that he lives in Belgium. He said he has some means of obtaining a high quality recording, so we'll see. I don't think background vocals would work because it takes away from the personal statement that is being made. Violin I hadn't thought of. I'll look into that.

hi leavings

can i ask what kind of guitar (model and brandname) did you use and the mic for the guitar too??? thnx did you apply compression??? thnx thats all :)

nice guitar sound :D

I have an Art and Lutherie acoustic, there's no specific model name that I see or know of.

I recorded using three mics, but only ended up putting two of them in the mix. I used two Rodes, an NT1 and an NT1a, set up like a coincident pair around the 13th fret. I didn't use any compression or other effects going into the machine. I added some reverb and a little EQ in the mix, and I was pretty happy with the way it came out so any more seemed superfluous.

The other mic I set up was an AKG D112 sitting right in front of the sound hole. I was trying to get that bassy strumming sound, but it ended up being too much.
