I am thinking of purchasing an external firewire enclosure to accommodate my IDE audio drive. By doing this, will it be beneficial for me? Also, by shifting to external, will data rates be faster(doubtful) or will working be safer/reliable?

Well, i expected that...but then what are the advantages of firewire hard drives?

I have mine for back-up, and portability.

I'm looking at these pro external drives at zzounds...stuff like the Glyph and Rain hard drives...they're really expensive, considering a firewire enclosure costs around $50 tops.
why is that so? i found a vantec nexstar 2 firewire for like $55 CDN.

I don't presonally think that they're worth it. All devices fail sooner or later. Just get another data drive / data pc.

If you're going to go with a high end HD, my advice would be Granite Digital. They're good about fixing firmware bugs and keeping firmware up-to-date, unlike a lot of vendors.... That said, they don't sell drives. They sell cases by themselves, and you have to provide the drive.

[Edit: I take that back. It looks like they also sell pre-assembled drive/case combinations now.]

Their only benefit is portability.
You can move them from one PC to another. They will be slower than a good IDE or SATA drive.

If you are looking for an affordable speed increase, look into a SATA2 drive, and a SATA2 controller to run it....

Portability is good, however you have to be able to take your plugins with you.

Stability is bad.

I was using a USB 2 external recently and it was not a good experience.

I have had a go with a firewire drive and it was just a disaster (even moving large chunks of data was problematic).

I now stick to internal drives and use externals to back stuff up / clear internal disks with - and that is all !
