well, ive been a mac/logic pro user for over a year now. and my mac is starting to bite the dust. i orginally was going to go the PC/protools LE route, or PC cubase SX route. but since i was practically given a Imac, and could get logic pro at a great discount i obveously went with logic/mac

the thing is logic is WAY too much for me. i do minimal sequencing, besides audio to score to add midi drum samples. and i do some looping sometimes. and since im wanting to upgrade my comp, i thought maybe id like to go the PC/protools route now, since i do eventually want to upgrade to protools HD. also, i could build a kickass PC for under 1000 bucks, but buying a powermac will cost over 2000 for the cheapest one. i could get a new imac again, but there arnt enough firewire/usb ports, and theres no way of expanding with one of those.

if someone could give me some guidance that would be siiick

right im running, a motu 828mkii, presonus digimax into the motu via lightpipe, and a presonus firepod (just the preamps) into the other analog ins on the motu. all into logic pro 7 on a 800 mhz apple imac witha gig of ram

Well, the first thing you gotta do is decide what software you really want to run. Don't get hung up on what hardware to use; that's putting the wrong thing first.

If you want some opinions about the software, how about a bit more detail on what you're doing and want to do in the future?

i guess thats a good way to look at it.

ok heres what i do.

MOSTLY multi track recording of pop, rock and metal bands. i use triggers on most of my metal stuff i record, so i need either a "audio to score" feature like logic has, or ill have to buy drumagog/soundreplacer/BFD

i DO use midi, a very small amount though, usually just pads and piano stuff, no extreme midi sequencing but it would be nice to have the ability.

i do a little bit of looping, nothing super heavy but alot like the jimmy eat world style of looping, (ambiant medly medly parts haha)

between lightpipe and regular inputs, id liek to be able to record 16 channels at once.

also, i like the fact of using a mac, my imac has never let me down, and PCs frustrate the hell out of me, i just hate thinking that i could build a kickass PC for under half the price of a low end powermac

So you want to change software because it has features you don't use and you want to change to a platform that frustrates you just because you can save a few dollars (guess your time and frustration isn't worth anything to you???)

Use GarageBand. Use CubaseSE for Mac (very good and simple to use bytheway...). Try something different.

I've owned and used both plaforms since 1984, and just chasing your tail won't help you record any better. Try some different software (go to a music store or a User Group) and THEN make your platform choice!

What Tim said. There are so many good multiplatform DAW progs (traktion, Cubase, Garageband, Digital Performer) Logic is an excellent DAW and I personally would stick with that

since i do eventually want to upgrade to protools HD.

That will run u at least $10 grand

i know how much it costs. im aiming for within the next 6 years to drop 15k on a protools HD system.
