Clearing some stuff off my minidisk , and came across this recording from my bands last gig...the gig itself was a bit of a strange one...we normally play parties/bars were we are familiar with the people..this party, the owner of the house heard of thru a friend who had seen us, and asked us to play...we knew we were in trouble when we pulled up that afternoon and it looked like a kids 5year birthday party....as the night went on things got better and we were able to let loose a bit...We have been messing with this Thin Lizzy tune for awhile and decided to play it this night, I find it pretty challenging being that we are a trio, and the 2 guitar/harmony thing is such a big part of Lizzy's sound....not sure if we are gonna keep this tune , but thought some of ya might like to hear it...note the defining silence at the end of the song(as well as the botched ending :o)

So what were the parameters for the gig? You said you arrived in the afternoon but were playing into the night? When did you play/how long/where ?

Pretty cool for a board mix - I could use some more bass guitar but overall it works for me. The playing is outstanding. I guess 5 year olds just don't get it when you rock out like this. Or, maybe they were so awestruck they were speechless :D.

I recorded this with a cheapo stereo mic right into a minidisk walkman...mic was pretty close to us...hanging from the edge of a tent frame we were under...
The party was for a lady who just graduated from nursing school....was at a really nice home in Milford Michigan....right near the G.M proving grounds. A few big tents set up with tables/chairs...we had our own tent which was nice as it was really hot. Alot of older relatives there in the beginning, we started our 1st set around 5..last song of the 1st set was "Whipping Post" which kinda thinned the herd a bit of the hearing aids/walkers :p....crowd pretty much got younger more rocking as the night went on... were only going to play 3 sets, but ended up playing 4....the party throwers were happy and threw in a xtra $100 for the last set which was real cool.(we were doing the gig for $300, not sure if that's good or bad, but I'm pretty much in it for fun).
We did get heckled by a 6 year old pretty much all night who wanted to hear "Freebird" for some reason....kept yelling freebird after every song....
I have a few tunes up from the gig...they are the top 5 songs on my music page, and say Milford gig on them if you wanna hear some more:

Don't you hate those smart ass hecklers :D

I checked out Movin' On (which I used to play an old band) - excellent!!!!

Sounds pretty good man. Great performance. Your drummer is getting down!

I think the mix could use some more bottom end. Maybe do a sharp cut on whatever frequency that bass-click is coming from. Cool song to cover and a great performance. good job. :)

Thanks Greg...yeah, our sound was kinda wacked at the time as a old lady had just came up to us and asked us if we know any "nice" songs :p...also asked if we could turn it down ......our bass player just got a new Musicman 5 string bass, and he is sounding kinda klanky on it...working on the sound still....
Thanks for listening....appreciate the comments!

Hey, thanks alot...I know the recording leaves alot to be desired, I usually get a bit better quality when I record our practice sessions...will try and post a better version from one of those.I am the guitar player for my band, and am pretty paranoid about playing these songs without the 2nd harmony lead guitar...have been thinking about using a doubler/harmony/pitchshifter type effect for the solo's, but am trying to keep my rig simple, so I don't know yet if Im gonna stick to the way we are playing it now...we also do Jailbreak , and have started learning Boys Are Back In Town...there is a song called Rosalie that bass player singer wants to try as well...not familiar with that one yet.
I had pretty much been familiar with Thin Lizzy from the big hits like Boys Are Back in Town, Jailbreak etc... after learning this song though I have kinda dug into them deeper and really dig there music.I have heard that the "Live And Dangerous" album is really good and am looking to pick it up...VH1 classic has recently been showing a live concert as well that is pretty awesome..I think Gary Moore is one of the guitarist on it.

ya gary was with them for a few years and he tours with the lizzy line up these days, out of all the guitarists that played with lizzy i always loved Scott Gorham's stlye the most.. live and dangerous is said to be the best live album of all time but there is bits of like guitar solos that have been taken from different gigs and pasted together but its so well done you wont notice it, i think its great it rocks and kicks ass.. i think any lizzy song is a good song to cover but rather than jail break and boys are back in town or even Rosalie(i guess its because they are the radio friendly songs and are covered alot over here but people want to hear them and ive nothing against a band that covers them actually the respect bar goes up for those bands) i prefer their earlier stuff like VAGABOND OF THE WESTERN WORLD and SHADES OF A BLUE ORPHANAGE and THIN LIZZY (self titled album) you sould cheak out those albums

i think your doing a great job on guitar i guess harmonizer type effect could help but your playing is spot on so i would'nt worry bout it

killer

that's great....like the others, would love to hear a studio version of this! Nice playing...

Ha you guys rock Ax! Always an awesome selection of tunes. I'd love to catch you guys live sometime if I ever head back to the midwest area (even if it's a 6 year olds Bday party :D) The Bad Company cover sounds like too much fun too. Keep up the rocking!! :D:D

Thanks for the great comments guys...appreciate it!
I just uploaded a recording from our practice last Wed......still just a minidisk live to 2 track recording...but it might sound a bit better....a few clams. There is some real bad rattling /buzzing in the intro from lower frequencies that I did not notice while we were playing....sounds bad, and I hope it's not a blown speaker or something...

THe rattle sounds like someone with one of those throat vibraters (post chord cancer) trying to hum along.
It's a good song - Rosalie is a terrific tune too. They were such a swaggering band - loved 'em. BUT of the Irish my absolute fav is Horslips (abbreviated they say from Four Horsemen of the Apocaplype to Four APOxmen of the Horslips to Horslips) - suss out Trouble with a Capital T for a good Party song or the Belfast Gigs CD for a good live overview.
I don't think you should be self conscious re the single guitar you fill the song well.
