They're a Drunken Mess! ... Perfect.

Hey guys,

I'm working on a piece at the moment its pretty much a Acoustic piece with a ska beat and groove (yes I will be using brass when I can get it,) and I have an idea for the outro. Bascially what I'd like to do is get a load of lads drunk (essentially paying them in beer) to sing a da da da da da outro as bad as they can while trying to hold a tune, (thus the idea of getting them drunk as in all fairness everyone thinks they can sing when they've had a few.

Heres the Question, is there a safe approach? I mean I could just get some college students (the type who'd do this kinda thing) get them drunk and into my studio but as I'm sure you know drunk people aren't easy to work with. and what about knocking over mic's and damaging stuff?

I also plan to have a few smashed bottles burps farts etc as fx for the outro.

Any ideas on what way to go about it? or should I just get a load of sober lads to act drunk then give them the beer?

You don't need to get them drunk.

Just get them to do it unrehearsed.

Unrehearsed ought to be as musically effective (or non-effective, as the case may be) as drunk--but with far less risk!
 
Or get them to act drunk and hit 'record'. Or get people who can't really sing well. Getting people actually drunk could be something you'll regret if they start fighting around or throwing up in your DAW or get into some lengthy esoteric drunken discussion on the nature of Siberian tigers or looking at you amourously and telling you how they love you !
 
Get a college choral/glee club, and have them ACT/SING drunk, if that's what you are going for.
 
Definitely get them drunk. Very drunk. That way, when they leave in their cars and kill someone, you'll be partially responsible and will have plenty of time while sitting in jail to come up with many other brilliant ideas like this one.
 
You can go to jail just for getting someone drunk if they're then stupid enough to get behind the wheel of a car?

I don't know the exact legality of it, but if you are responsible for getting people drunk, and they go out and fuck shit up, you can be held partially responsible. It's a big gray area, but not unherad of in our fucked up legal system.
 
Recording breaking glass can be hard. You may want to check out free on line FX libraries ... same goes for farts and burps!

You can do muti over dubs by recording live pub banter and then bring in 3 or 4 acting school students (male and female) into your studio to voice over certain drunk specialty key phrases. For acting drunk can be hard!
 
Id get everyone drunk, just get your self and a few mates who you know you will have a good time with but know will rspect you and how important and costly your craft is to you and get drunk to a good point. I mean I get fairly loud and clumsy when Im really drunk, but I still know what I can throw around and what I should keep away from. Plus it gives you one of those stories. Get older people. collage guys and I know from exprience cause I am one hav tendancies not to care.
 
Oh! but do get some drunk collage chicks get them to sit in the corner away from all the gear, that way, the drunk guys will be more attracted to the hot girls opposed to the shiny mics

... I live in Ireland, the law's here are a little more loose, Drunk driving is 100% the drivers fault, and not just that but in the village in Louth where I'll be doing this project the Gardaí (Irish Police) are out of the barracks at the latest at 2am every night and drink driving is common enough.
 
Shall I post the song as is? I still have to add Acoustic Guitars, Elec's, Brass and a real Vocal take but its taking form.

I'm Uploading now, :) Its still a little bare bones as I said and the vocals need to be added properly the ones on it are just done using a 57 to help me realise where I was in the song.
 
Just get a bunch of your non-musical friends together to sing on the track. Have some beer, some wine and cheese available as refreshments... but generally "non musical" people will do the "out of tune" / "out of time" just as well [and in many cases better] than drunk people.

I've done several hundred "gang vocal" sessions over the years. Generally we just pulled in the studio staff [from techs to runners to office staff] threw them a couple of bucks for their "performance" and moved on [no beer, no wine, no cheese]... but that was when music was recorded in proper professional facilities and staff was available. These days, I'd just call a bunch of friends who don't do music for a living as they'll have a blast wearing headphones and being in a studio.
