How cool would that be!
Doubt I can afford it though.
While I have you guy's attention...
I do want a rackmount system though. My work will likely cause me to move back to the city, but I'll still keep the studio here at the farm. I've been thinking about a few options.
As it stands right now I'm here three days a week, the other four I'm in the city working. I've just been basically couch surfing while I'm in work mode for now, but I'll be getting an apartment late summer, but still basically going back and forth (it's only an hour and 40 min. drive)
1) two computers. I'm getting a Deta 1010 soon. I already have a GL 496. I could keep my current setup here at the studio with the delta, build something reasonable and stick the 496 in it. Get two removable drivebays, put one in each, and a 20-40 GB drive to carry around. I figure I can do this for <$1000 (the $600 for the Delta 1010 notwithstanding)
2) Rackmount my current computer, get two monitors. A monitor here a monitor there. I'd carry the rack mount back and forth, and possibly the other monitor too and get some dual monitor action going on once in a while when I'm doing some serious projects here. This would be about $250-$300 for the rackmount case, $250 for another monitor. so about $500
3) Build and Rackmount a new DAW. Go all out. Get completly portable and try to get some recording gigs while I'm in the City too instead of just being a weekend warrior. This is sort of the main goal. as far as how to do this...
3a) get a laptop, somehow rackmount a docking bay. I figure this would cost around $3000 minimum, but would be super portable.
3b) get one of those lunch box thingys. I have no idea what they cost to put together, frankly I'm scared to call and ask!
3c) rackmount chassis, rig up some sliding tray for a keyboard and mouse (would be much cheaper than spending $150 or so for a rackmount keyboard) and lug a monitor around. probably a small 15" (uggh) a rackmount case for a monitor is like $275-$350, but I'd probably try and rig something up myself, just build a box and put handles on it and be carefull! I'm thinking I could get something like that together for <$2000
then of course some small powered speakers. (ps6 maybe) Racking up the rest of the equipment would be simple but also cost a bit, (a case for mics, rack for mixer, rack for preamps, compressors. so that's like 5 or 6 bills there maybe with the monitors)
this is kind of fun actually, I think I will be well served to go mobile, can't get too much work with my studio where it is in the middle of nowhere, but's nice to come down here and record.
ultimatly $$$ will decide, I won't have to do everything at once though, so maybe in like 10 years...
