This must be some sort of an affliction or something. I already have a 2" machine, that should have been enough, but no. The good 'ol friend of a friend thing led to me driving up to Burbank today to check out a pair of Sony APR 24s. I wiped them down a bit, opened the power supplies to check caps, fuses, charring etc. Then I did a very basic cleaning of the tape path, not really dirty at all. I tried powering up and no suprises so figured I'd load a tape on one and see what happened. Thing went in the right directions but no brakes, took for ever to come to a stop after spooling. Couldnt hook anything to them to check output as I dont have any Tuchel (SP?) connectors, but the tape I put on had 24 tracks of program and all the VUs were reading something, good enough for me. Loaded em up on my trailer:

Got them home and unloaded safely and started a bit better cleaning and checking over. Found tags on the headblocks from sprague magnetics, just wish they had a date on them. Second power up and all the brake problems have vanished, so I enjoyed a quiet afternoon cleaning and lubing.

Pretty straight machines once I got through the dirt.

More to follow. Tonite Im going through the one remote/auto-locator I got in the deal.

What pisses me off is that it seem 95% of all really decent used 2" machines and analog consoles for sale seem to be located in friggin' southern California....and I'm in NY. :(
Use to be NY had it's share of good used gear...but not lately....at least no is selling it.

So is like Hemet, CA the nexus of then known analog audio universe?
If I see see one more location listed on eBay as Hemet, CA.... I'm going to scream.

:D

Nice looking machines....keep us posted!

Can't believe sony had the foresight to make a little mobile phone recess.

Seriously though, Those are just beautiful.

More P0rn,,,<ahem>, more pics please.

Once in a while a good reason to live in Cali comes along, LOL. Hemet is a tiny little place but there are at least two players in the vintage analog market out there. One does mostly consoles and the other tape machines IIRC.

Burbank, Hollywood and all around there are still loaded with the stuff, most of it has migrated from the studios to the storage facilities. Driving around through those areas I almost expect to see this stuff at the yard sales....

Hemet... hahaha. Lots of horses, dust, hot weather, and studio stuff.

There's an 8516b on sale a few miles south of Hemet in Temecula (was thinking about grabbing it for spares), at least two m3700s for sale a few miles north and west of Hemet. At least two ms16s for sale around Lake Elsinore (a few miles west from Hemet). An Atr80 24 track a bit further east of Hemet. Several flavors of msr machines in Temecula... next door to Hemet.

Yeah, I'd say Hemet is pretty happening lately.

I really do hate you.....

:)

Tell me that 'vette in the garage was also a "yard sale find", and I'm moving to your neighborhood. :D

Make sure to dump the ROM on these machines, they're notorious for the program code evaporating and leaving you with a heap of junk.

How is that done? And thanks for the heads up (I think)

You'll need an EPROM programmer. Basically, you carefully remove the EPROM(s) from the control board, put them into the programmer (making sure it's the right way around and that the programmer has been told what kind of chip it is!) and download the contents to a computer. I usually test it by burning the downloaded copy into a new chip and installing that one back in the machine.

If you know a car mechanic or a good electronics tech they might be able to do it for you, since high end 1980s/1990s cars would typically have the ECU software in an EPROM.

The thing is, the EPROM is only guaranteed to store its contents for 10-15 years, so it's better safe than sorry IMHO.

mdainsd,

Congrats on the acquisition! Really nice machines!

I'd love to do a desk top wallpaper treatment of those machines if you'd be kind enough to PM or email me a full resolution image of them...something with no cut off corners or edges and decently lit.

Cheers! :)

Thanks! That would be cool. I'll see what I can do, I've moved them into the house and its a little cramped where they are, but I'll figure something out. I wont have the missing doors for a week or two, if that matters....

*edit - could I interest you in doing one for my Tascam ATR-24?

The missing doors are not a problem and sure, love to do a TASCAM ATR800-24 too!

Cheers! :)

Sent you a PM. I have a couple of shots of it .
