I am using Cubase LE and Tascam US-122L on a laptop with newly installed Windows XP.

I have a problem with disturbing background noise, it sounds kind of like static from a tv or radio without signal. I have hooked a set of head phones to the sound device and hear the noise as soon as it is plugged in to the computer (=turned on). The static follows on to my recordings and is clearly heard after saving the file and playing it with another program. When recording with the computer's sound card there is no static.

I have tried:
Changing the USB-cable, stereo/head phones, microphone and microphone cable.
Clean installations of the drives.
Putting the tascam device as default for input and output
Placing the device as far as I can away from the computer
Letting the computer run on battery
Placing the whole shebang in the middle of the room, as far away from any electrical chords as possible.
Trying both the device's line/mic-in slots

There has always been som humming which I have always blamed the computer for. This time however, the sound is muuuuch louder and clearly different. There is no way this sound can be made acceptable.

Help?

Does on-board sound work ok?
What version of Win XP (I've heard bad things about SP3)?
Can you try the interface on a different computer(you said you've always had "some" noise)?

Hmmmm... I'll have to find another computer and try there... whatever did people do before they could afford having multiple computers??

The on-board sound works just fine, and I'm running service pack 3.

To be continued....

Aye, plenty of unwanted country music comes through my Tascam.
