Master of the Obvious
I finally found out the TRUE secret on becoming a Mastering engineer. It has nothing to do with research on forums or learning from Pros. The most you get on a forum is...
A. Send it to a Pro & Don't even think about doing it at home on a Sub Par System.
OR
B. Mastering made simple:
1 - EQ to taste and/or as needed.
2 - Compress to taste.
3 - Limit to taste.
4 - Sample rate convert if needed.
5 - Dither to 16 bits and save.
6 - Burn a disk.
B. is almost as good as how I learned to be a Tracking Engineer...
1. Have a Room w/ a sound to record in
2. Have instruments or sources to record. (Sound quality varies for intended purpose)
3. Find the right Mics for the sources to be recorded.
4. Plug Mics in to a preamp (*very important and overlooked quite often)
5. Put Mics in close proximity of the source.
6. Coax musician into giving the performance of his/her lifetime.
7. Record the inspired performance.
8. Add Compression, EQ, & Reverb to tracks & Mix to taste.
That was all so easy. It's confused me why the B. method of Mastering is so hard to get a handle on. Until now!!
Last week my friend had a baby and to everyone’s amazement, stamped right on the back of its little head was MASTERING ENGINEER. All the rumors were true... Dammit!! The stork doesn't bring em and I can't become one.
And then the cloud lifted & I saw the light... Just like all those pills I took that didn't work to make my penis more enjoyable for my Wife... No magic or knowledge would help me Master music. BUT at least I won't waste any money! Next time I go get some tunes Mastered... I'm bringing a razor. I wish I could have shaved a few of the mechanics heads I've taken my car to.
Have a good one,
B.
*On a side note... although the Pills didn't help out my wife’s situation... My girlfriend says it was Money well spent!!
