The Tragedy of the Baby Robots - VHS covers another obscure band no one's heard of!

This is prob my favorite of the stuff I've heard of yours. This one has a nice groove thats the right combo of herky-jerky and groove, probably the bass and kick are jelling up nicely. I really like the prominent bass. Now - this song has a really interesting lyric once it develops to the point of that furious pace. It's basically a story song, and quite funny and even a little sad. To be honest - like any story song (as opposed to a vibe song) I gotta hear the words, and I gotta hear ALL of them. The doubling and the level are distracting from my ability to follow the story. If I can suggest - listen to some old shit like Stan Ridgeway. He basically does story songs and he sticks his neck out and puts his voice way the hell out there. Or TMBG - I never in my life struggled to hear their lyric. All this shit I wrote is just one faceless dudes opinion, so take it for what it's worth....

Ah, Getting The Lyrics to Be Comprehensible Without Overwhelming The Rest Of The Mix, my old nemesis. We meet again!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to revisit it and see if I can get the lead to stick out a bit more. (Especially towards the end, right? That's where I start losing track of it.)

I'm not meaning to bag on you, as I think the song is cool. Yeah - from the middle towards the end as the story heats up and the pace of the delivery starts to get a little more amped up. But anyway - it's just my 2 c. Someone else might like having to work a little harder to figure it out, and then get it and enjoy it all the more. Who the heck knows :-)

Yeah, I agree with chuck. Can't make out the vocals really at all. The rest aint too bad, your instrument/music mixes have come a long way, but if the whole song hinges on the story in the vocals, we gotta be able to make em out. :o

I listened to Mix 2, by the way.

I finished Mix 3 before I read Greg's response (thanks, btw). I boosted the lead vocals and the primary harmony in the last few lines of the song. I also side-chained compressed the countermelody a bit to keep it from stepping on the lead's toes.

No worries, Chuck. I'm not offended by well-meaning (and especially valid) criticisms of my work. Without the feedback I've gotten in the clinic over the years, I would be far FAR worse at this whole deal!

This is really cool VHS - I listened to mix 3. Plenty of interest from the guitar counter melody and some great backing vocals. Your vocals also sound more natural here than previous songs I've heard - less of the telephone vocal sound and it works. I feel you've got the right balance between vocal clarity and volume level in this mix too.

All sounds good - I got no issues for ya :D

Thanks, Rob.

Yeah, I consulted a guy who'd mixed my voice once before to see what he did to avoid the AM radioy sound. Good to know it's working!

Checked out mix3.....I really like this...vocals sound great in this mix...lotsa stuff going on , cool tune!

Mix three is getting somewhere really special. I was cracking up when I caught myself developing empathy for the plight of the baby robots :-) An emotional response is a sure sign of something good afoot....

Hey VHS - I listened to mix 3 and I think the instrument mix sounds really good. This is light years ahead of some stuff from years back. Good job.

Personally, I'm still having trouble understanding a lot of the lyrics, although the actual sound quality of the capture of the vocals is again way ahead of where you were at a while back.

I thought for a moment I was listening to the wrong track as I read Rob saying the vocals sounded so natural....and then I'm hearing a robot voice? Anyway, good work on this. I am looking forward to hearing more as you continue to advance.

Maybe natural isn't the right term for a robot song, but the vocals here have more of a hi-fi sound and seem less treated, and sound really good for it.

There's some Vocaloid towards the end. That's probably the robot voice you're hearing. (You've used that software, right Rob?)

Any suggestions on how to get the lyrics more comprehensible? The original was already a pretty fast and distorted delivery; then I sped it up some more, so it's tough!

Like it!

I was OK with the words, generally - hearing/understanding them, that is... but then I sort of read the page whilst I was trying to find the thing to click and so perhaps I picked up the meaning from that.

Nice though... good to hear something different. I'd click the Like button if you had one...

Ach, my ipad wont play/download the tune....ill listen to it when i get home...but i liked the facebook page, so look for a handsome scot of pefect weight in amongst yer new fans ;)

Dude why did you pull this track ?!?! I was heading back for another listen :-(
