Lizard People
Hey folks, here's a brand new one Incanus wrote. That's him playing bass and most of the rhythm guitars. This is the very first mix, so please feel free to throw in your two cents about whatever you like. There is eventually going to be a guitar solo after the quiet section - I know it sounds naked there.

The song is called The Time I Took:

WOW

This just knocks me right off my feet...
I just love this song from the first beat, it reminded me off rush up to a 10 seconds then it just took of, and man this is just great.
Its truly magnificant work from the beginning to the end, great riff, great drumming.
Your vox are up there as usual your a kick ass singer, I`m really digging this track.
The way you make the vox sound is just so pro, It really sound well produced to me.

and thanks for staying true to the 70`s sound, I loved all your other stuff but this one is my new fave.

Great work, best compliments from me, ten thumbs up and all that

Very cool sounding so far. I really like the drums. They sound very cool with this tune. Guitar tone is great. Harmonies are spot on as usual... :D
Nice bass tone. Its very big. Can't wait to hear it finished. Also, really enjoyed the lyrics. Very cool. Nice tune, all around, guys. :)

Thanks, Naka. Steve really wrote a great song and the little parts sort of wrote themselves. Out of curiosity, since we weren't aiming for a retro sounding piece specifically, could you point out what makes this song sound 70s to your ears?

Hehe, and we find out why Nak plays guitar and sings so well, he has ten thumbs :p

This rules, love it! I agree with Nak about the overall 70s feel. To me, it's the vocals, guitar tones, and bouncy rhythms. The claps on the verse too, I love that.

Great track guys, sounds professional to me, I'd seriously buy something like this. It's great stuff :)

Thanks, everyone, for listening!

I guess we just sound '70's' no matter what we do!!! I'm not going to fight it. We don't try to do it that way, but we also don't not try either.

When I first started with these guitar parts, I was hoping that a lot of cool and interesting things would happen with the surrounding instruments (including vox). Then Casey did such a wonderful job with the drum tracks, that I couldn't just let all those moments go without meeting him on the bass.

BTW, the lyrics are Casey's--a pretty important part of the song. I'd say that qualifies him as a song-writer on this.

There are a few warts on this recording, and I think some of the levels have to be fine tuned more, but it's almost there.

I love that main guitar riff. Cool the way the drums hang behind the beat with the triplets leading into the vocal entrance. Nice bass line at :36 in the way it rises up from its paralleling of the opening gtr into its new figures. Great vocals. The ooOOoo vocals at 1:40 are really nice, also the harmonized vocal at 2:45.

Very cool, guys. Sounds raw but polished at the same time. Completely rocking. Do you listen to Brendan Benson? If not, I think you'd enjoy him. Similar vibe to the stuff you guys do. Keep 'em coming.

We listened several times to this on our way home. (6 hour drive). Cool everytime. Very good interaction between every instrument. Vocals sit very well. I do really love the bass tone you got. Very nice. Really fills the song up. Drums sound very good also.
Nice tune guys..... :)

So what do you guys think of the 13" china? It appears only at :32.5 (with another crash) and at :41. I'm on the fence. I've never used a china before and I'm not sure if I like it or not. It definitely gives it a more "modern" sound.

Since it is not "Noticeable", I'd say it worked great. Seems to fit in with everything else. Your tunes are "Odd", in a good way. They combine elements of some older rock, with modern sounds. Not overdone, or overproduced, but they sound very smooth. The real words are......Well Done. I hear stuff I listened to way back, yet the sound is modern. This to me is progressive. You build upon which may already have been there....

I agree with Dog. It is not noticable. In fact, I would like to hear it a bit stronger, now that I re-listened focusing on the cymbals. It is a cool cymbal sound. :)

I got two words for you, m'man: Steely Muh'fuckin' Dan. Whoever's doing the singing hits those Donald Fagen notes that are so hard to hit, and furthermore can't be arsed to repeat himself... and that hits at a very specific piece of the '70s that can't be found elsewhere.

Meanwhile, though, I'm finding similarities in here to everything from Foo Fighters to Ben Folds to 911 to The Beatles. From my perspective, you guys have managed to blend a diverse range of influences into something at once unique and completely familiar, and that's a skill not often found; it's an Oscar Wilde turn of phrase that sets your foot a- tappin'. This track in particular kicks my ass up one end of the street and down the other, it exudes class and style and a sensibility that merges the obscure with the mundane.

Blah, blah, blah. There. You just got some Rock Criticism tossed at you. Don't let it go to your head, and similarly don't fucking stop. Screw you guys, I'm going home.

Tim--always glad to hear what you have to say about what you hear! It's kind of an odd song, but I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the direction it ultimately took. I didn't see it as being a busy bass song at first, but now. . . And I'm glad you enjoyed the guitar riff; compared with what you play it seems kind of silly. Nah, it's just Rock and Roll! No comparison is warranted.

Dogman--glad you were diggin it on the drive. I noticed in my truck I couldn't hear the instruments in the very, very quiet part; only the tapping stuff, and some coughing. We may have to fix that. I played my rickenbacker bass on this song--the tone I got comes mostly from that. Man, it's almost too brash, but I guess not.

Discord--thank you very much for the encouragement. You don't have to worry about our heads getting big--for one thing I am profoundly humbled every single time the red record light goes on. There are quite a few sketchy moments in this song, but I'll probably overlook them as I'd hate to mess around with the character of this song as it is. Supercreep is singing. I think he has a great voice, and knows how to use it effectively--that's how he got the job! :D :D :D

True--Are you sure about that cymbal? I don't mind it. Just a different flavour for that part of the song. I think that they've been around long enough now, and everyone's heard them a few billion times, that only the most vintage-retro-snob-connoisseur type would scoff and frown upon it. Really we should see what another drummer or two might have to say.

Scrubs--thanks man. The raw-but-polished thing was something that was a deliberate decision from the outset. I saw that much of it, at least, at the time.

Thats a lovely swinging groove. Some of the vocal harmonies almost remind me of Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath etc. Fantastic mix. Perhaps, but only perhaps make the distorted guitar tones more rocking, although actually, I dunno, prob doesn't need it. Overall, I think the mix could be slightly `wider' (but again perhaps not) but its only a first mix, plus mastering will inevitably make this more prominant etc :-)
