Looking for reviews/suggestions/comments on the recording and mix.

Thanks guys!

Jarred...

First off.. excellent song. I like it a lot. Very good structure. Catchy melody. Sounds influenced, but not dirivitive. Vocals are kind of Dave Mathews-ish. But the guitar works is more elaborate.

I'm a sucker for clean, clear records, but I think you need some warmth. It feels slightly cold.

In the verse with guitar only - meter seems to waver slightly. I'd shorten the intro by half. And in the end - the non-lyric singing... shorten it and/or add a counter melody.

But, I gotta tell ya, it sounds very well devoloped.
Excellent job.

Thanks for the kind words! My friend would be very happy to hear the Dave Matthews likeness. He is a huge fan.

I agree with cutting down the verse with guitar only. He wanted to do a vocal track with some lyrics on top of the humming at the end. We just ran out of time the other night and had to leave.

Other than song structure, how is the mix? The vocals are a little too loud I think, but I want some more input on that.

Thanks!

The mix is good... full and dynamic. I have no problem with the vocal levels. Sometimes the lyrics are kinda hard to understand. Are you seperately compressing the vocal track? you should.

The overall compression is adequate. It is, after all, an acoustic guitar based song, so you want it up front and close.

The EQ seems to make it sound a bit too cool. As an acoustic guitar based song, I think it should have some personality. The high end seems a little brittle. Soften some edges, on a track level (cymbals, guitars). Look for places to cut above 8k. That should warm it up a little.

I do have the vocals separately compressed. Do you think they need more compression?

I struggled with the highs. If I went any lower it started to get too muddy. We have yet to add a bass track to it. Hopefully this weekend we can.

Thanks for the input!
