first of all i didnt spend money on a big soundcard with the 8 inputs like m-audio... i use the new soundblaster card platinum ex..
i then attach a beringer 6 channel mic/mixer to my line inputs for bass an guitars..
i use the midi coonection on the soundblaster to record my keyboards...
i record all these tracks into cakewalk sonar recording software an mix an edit using variiouus plugins..
then ..
play back into near field monitors..
my pc specs are:

512 mb ram
40 gig hRD DRIVE
DIRETCX 8 PLUGINS
