Just like everything else im trying to find out what people say is the standard for monitars when on a budget. For example with pre amps, everyone agrees that the DMP3 is the standard for a budget pre. Everything cheaper then that seems to be total crap. What do you think?

Good question.

It would be interesting to hear what others think.

Personally I use Tannoy Active reveals which cost me £349 GBP (is that a budget price) they have been rated as being "affordable". I find they give a very clear sound, although slightly lacking in the low end.

Behringer (sore subject in the other forums!) do the Truths at £245 and I have heard that these are okay, although I havent heard them myself.
HHB Circles have also been rated as very good at £225 GBP
Tannoys Passive version of the reveals are priced at £145 (these are all ex tax prices by the way)
there are loads I have missed but hopefully that will give you an idea.

Its vital that you define your price range and listen to them in a shop with a recording that you know inside out and choose which models you prefer - remember it's your ears that are going to be working with them!

If there's a 'standard', which there's not, I would guess for this site it would be the Yorkville YSM models or some of the M-Audio pieces. Those, at least, seem to be the most popular.

Around here, at least . . . most of the talk/buzz seems to be about the Yorkvilles.

I have the Paradigm Phantoms (the single 8' woofer with a tweeter) They are cheap and sound very good. Anyone else tried these?

Yamaha NS10s are the standard in Nearfield monitors...period. there3 are more of them in studios than any other.

Like others have said, it all depends on what you mean by "budget." That said, using my definition (meaning < $300 and "active," meaning you don't also have to buy a separate amplifier) I'd say it'd be the M-audio BX-5's. You can sometimes get a pair of "blemished" ones at musiciansfriend.com for $240, or they're $299 new. I think the Behringer Truth's are also $299, but I haven't had any experience with them. I don't think I'd trust the Behringer quality control over M-audio though...I just think M-audio makes much better products for the price. I have a pair of the older version of the BX-5's, called the SP-5B's, which I got for $199 brand new. For the money they're absolutely unbeatable!

Actually, there's a blemished pair of Behringer Truth's on MF right now for $269. Blemished just means they've been returned, so it might be that they don't come in the original box, or are missing the manual, or maybe have a little scratch on them, but they are guaranteed to work 100%.

Yamaha ns10s are also widely known for sounding like absolute crap, but a lot of famous producers use them because it is what they learned on back when they were the only affordable monitors available. Now everybody thinks they are great cause they see all these big named producers and engineers using them, but anyone who has ever A/B'd them with another decent monitor system knows they sound horrible. They are a nice tool for checking mixes but pray to god if you have to use them as your sole monitoring system.

From the short time that I heard NS10s they were definitely not somethign I could take for very long. Just harsh to my ears.

I'm using the Alesis Monitor One MKII and an A.R.T. amp. Not exactly what you're lookign at but I've been very happy with the setup. I picked them over some Yamaha and Mackie monitors. I personalyl think they are way underrated.

I have used them. I also have Titans and the Mini Mk IIs. The bass response is way too hyped and they crap out fast. The Yorkies blow them away.

The bass response maybe hyped some but they don't crap out on me. I'm power them up with a Bryston 4B and they sound pretty good.

Ive used the Alesis monitors and thought they made good stereo speakers but they didnt make me tweak as much as the NS10s...which can be very usefull once you know how to make that harshness go away.

I've been using Tapco S5's for the last few months and I love them. They sound great and only cost $230 from the local shop.

I've still not had the slightest interest in upgrading my KRK Rokits, which I find increadibly detailed with fantastic imaging. I did add a sub, which filled in the bottom nicely.

Not to hijack a thread or anything but what sub did you add Robert D?

Mike

I think that's pretty well on topic, since most budget monitors are a little lacking in bottom end. I added a Polk Audio sub, not sure of the model #. I wasn't terribly scientific about it, just adjusted the crossover to approximately the rolloff of the KRK's, and I run it pretty lean......just enough to round out the bottom, not hype it. It definitely made my mixes translate better, with less supprises in the bass area.
