the song as an element of the mix

I realized that the better the song, the less I focus on the mix. When I force myself to focus on the mix, I usually end up hating something about it. Perfect example: the openining guitar on "BENT" by matchbox twenty irritates the heck out of me.

Also, if the lead vocal is really good, I dont concentrate on much else. On the other hand, I hear some really good arrangements with awesome recorded instruments but mediocre lead vocal and its just not the same.

I think that the better the song and the arrangement and the recording is, the more the mix just seems to take care of itself........So, I think I kind of agree with you....It's all subjective though.......
