Freakin' sweet
...is one big freakin microphone.

If small diaphragm condensers are usually referred to as "pencil" condensers, you can go right ahead and call this one a "magic marker" condenser.

It is not short, by any stretch of the imagination.

And here it sits at work, waiting for me to be done and go home so I can do some test recordings on my acoustic... this is the problem with having gear shipped to your business addy - ya don't miss the package as you would if they were to try and deliver it to your house, but then you have to sit at work all day, while it sits there, begging you to leave early to play with it

Why don't you set it up at your work and sing some tunes? I'm sure the employees will love the entertainment :D

I'm right there with you. I have left early due to "sickness" many times because I had toys to play with at home.

You've used a microphone before, right?

You plug it in ... it picks up sound.

Man, I hate to say it, but that's pretty dorky.

:D

Yea, it is, 'nuff said. Mic sounds great - picks up the guitar perfectly. Now its just the guitar that doesn't sound good :(:D

Congrats mang!

You're going to LOVE your new SM-81. It never lies. My pair have proved themselves over and over again since I bought them 11 years ago.

Great mic (I've used them live as overheads) but I think I'd have to go with 451's over the SM81 any day though (even if they do cost a couple hundred $ more.

M-Audio DMP-3.

Its like I'm in the room with my extremely boomy acoustic that nothing ever seems to fix (not that I expected the mic to - I bought the mic more for an accurate recording of whatever guit I upgrade to)

my mate has just bought 2 & is going to let me try them out.............I've been using C1000s as SDCs for ages now

You are gonna LOVE the SM81s. I went from C1000s(yuck) to Sm81s and there's a huge difference. I use 'em normally in an X/Y configuration for acoustics and also use them a lot as overheads for drums. My other choice for SDCs would be Neumann Gefells M70s with MV692 capsules. A little more real, not so much scooped mids. Nice..

Enjoy:)

+1 for staring at new gear deiverd to workplace. Just got new stuff today. Long lunch. :D:D

Yea, I really like the overall output of the SM81 - even sounds good when Im signing and playing all at once - of course, I already have a nice LDC for that, so it dun't matter :p

Like I said, unfortunately the source is the last problem in the chain. Sounds nice, and the boomy Ab notes on the guitar aren't as pronounced, so I think for the time being after working a little with mic placement and EQ, I could get a very nice sound, even with my bassiest of acoustic guitars.

True, but it is still a 3/4" shaft mike, which is fairly common in the skinny, accurate mikes world. SM-81s fit on the same stand adapters as my RE-55s... and vice versa, of course.

Cheers,

Otto

You mentioned the size of the SM81's. This pair of Gefell M300's is a compact design, only about 6 inches long. But man they are awesome little buggers!

I am planning on getting the SM81B. What is the difference between the SM81 and SM81B or is there?

Where do you see the SM81-B? I can't find it anywhere online... unless its just the bitchin version of the SM81, although my standard is pretty bitchin by itself :D

You mean that mic is so good it picks up American Sign Language? Now I gotta have one!

Hm, I must be imagining things. I could have sworn it was called an SM81B. :o

...???

Do you normally play guitar with your face so that you are unable to sing while playing guitar?:D
