So I just unpacked my aardvark q10 (its used). The shield/cover thing on the PCI card falls off the card. The huge amount of glue came undone on all 4 spots and it's not being held on there anymore.

*How important is this to the card - is it really succesptable to interfierance?
*Can I Superglue it back on or something...in the same spot? haha. I dont want to mess anything up here...

and ideas?

I don't know .... that helps don't it?

I would imagine it was there for good reason, or at least added protection.
Most likely it was just attached using hot glue.
I'd remove the original glue the best I could and clean the attaching area with some rubbing alcohol. You could pry glue it back on with any kind of non-conductive glue .... I'd pry just use some more hot glue. Then I'd take a few plastic wire zip-ties, around the whole card, and tie that sucker on.

if your going to use those ties my advice is to ensure they are non
conductive and dont touch any other cards/parts in your pc.

I don't think I've ever run across any plastic zip-ties that are conductive.

ive seen some that have bits of very thin metal inside.
maybe we arent talking about the same ties.peace.

Oh yeah .... maybe you are thinking of those twist-ties for like garbage bags or bread loaf bags.

I'm speaking of the positive lock zip-ties normally used on wiring harnesses.

argh....haha. Hot glue, eh? And what if it IS conductive?? I dont want to mess up..

The glue is still stuck to the card, so if I never had my card turned in the wrong direction, I think it would stay on the card (the casing, that is). But should it really be ATTATCHED to work correctly? ahh!

Is it just some kind of metal plate for shielding purposes?
I don't think I would want it loose in my machine!
What do you think might happen if it falls off and touches some other components?
Magic Smoke ....
One of my old instructors once told me that all electronic devices work off of magic smoke and once you let that magic smoke out .... they stop working.
You could try a little Super glue on the plate it's self, just be sure to orient the card in a manner in which the glue doesn't run onto the card it's self, while the glue sets.
If you aren't comfortable with making the repair yourself, I'm sure any local electronics repair place could set you straight for a minimal charge.
Or for that matter, just try using the card without the shield and see if it causes any interference problems.
Seeing as how is was just glued on, I can't see that it would cause the card to not function without it.

Have you got the right tools for this job shackrock?

Pipe wrench, cold chisel, oxy-acetylene torch. That glue don't come off easy

no I probably dont.

haha

What do you tihnk about just using that epoxy stuff? And put it all around the hardened glue that's already on it, and just let that harden with the thing on. Only thing is, I'm not sure what kind of temperature that epoxy can handle, does anyone forsee this as a problem?
I can't ask aardvark now of course, because who knows whats going on with them!

No, I don't see that as a problem. If it gets hot enough inside your computer to melt the glue/epoxy off .... you've pry got some other serious issues. haha

By the way ..... How goes it with the files?

Ok, I'll probably check out the epoxy stuff then. Hopefully this will all work out...man oh man me and my woes.

as for the files - here's what I just posted over in that thread:

thanks everyone.

somebody over at the vegas forums had a great idea - which i never even knew was possible.

those data recovery programs REALLY do work..haha!

My BACKUP drive is something like 150gig, and it's not even half full. So, when I MOVED those files from the backup, to the C drive (and in the proccess everything got corrupt)...the files aren't really DETELED from the drive (backup drive). They are just shown to me as deleted, and are on the physical drive until I put something else on top of that same sector on the hard drive.

anywho, A freeware data recovery program brought ALL of the files back, flawless, and they work perfect. Thank you so much. haha. YES!!!!!!!!

I'm keeping that program in my arsenal for now. haha.
