Never Sarcastic....Honest
Hey guys,

I've got a new song out on MP3 and would like some feedback. It was recorded on a Roland 840EX.

The song is called "The Sadness and the Blue".

Thanks!!

It's a nice song. I think you did a good job recording it. The guitar has a nice tone -- is that a 12-string? -- although the phrasing needs a little work. Vocals are pretty much on key, although they sound strained (as you forewarned)-- your voice is distinctive and could sound really good if you work on that (breathing technique, etc.).

Great song!!....seems I've heard the progression before but the lyrics and melody made it original. Good hooks. The recording quality sounded a little rough on my pc. What was the effect on the vocal track?

Thanks for the reviews. Here's my track notes on this song.
MAC, the 840EX has a bunch of internal effects, and I started off with one of the presets and tweaked it a little. Can't recall which patch it was offhand and I am at work right now. I can check later if you want.

Anyways, here's the high level scoop:

Gear - Roland 840EX, ART Tubepac, Rode NT1

Acoustic guitar - cheap Ibanez 6 string acoustic/electric. Recorded 2 different takes both direct in and miked with NT1 through Tubepac. Recorded onto 4 separate tracks and mixed down to a stereo pair. Individually, the direct in sounded a bit tinny and brittle and the miked tracks sounded kinda boomy and bassy, but when mixed, I thought it came out okay. Direct ins were panned hard left and right and the miked tracks were panned to about 25 left and right respectively. I experimented with different effects on the guitar, but ended up keeping it absolutely dry.

Bass - Ibanez active bass run direct in through Tubepac. No effects applied, might be a bit too low in the mix.

Drums - Boss DR770 synched to 840EX, but ended up recording to a stereo pair for main beat. Bounced to another stereo pair with internal effects. Too much reverb perhaps??!?!?!? Cymbals and fills were added by banging on the little pads at mix down (flange effect from the DR770 was used - very obvious on the fadeout cymbal crash).

Vocals - NT1 to Tubepac to 840EX recorded with Dry Vocal patch and then added additional internal effects after. I like the sound that I got on the vocals and I also approached the limit of how high I can sing!!! It took a gazillion takes on the vocals to get it where it is, not perfect, but not too bad.

Mixed from 840EX to Philips 765 stand alone CD recorder via optical out. Mixing is the hardest part to me. I am using consumer stereo equipment to listen to the mixes (cheap speakers too) as well as Sony headphones.

Thanks guys,

You wrote a very good song, but one thing that immediately comes to mind is the amount of treble that is present in the mix.

It made me reach for the volume switch

Yeah, that treble thing, but I screwed around with the eq in winamp and made it all better...'cept that first channel really showed how much the bass sound was way too hot, if you mess with it too much.....

I totally dug the vocals, but that echo/verb on the snare was way tooooooo much.....(to my ears).....

Great separation on the sounds.....great writing....

NOTE: way over a year ago, S8-N recommended winamp for listening to the mp3s here, and he was dead on right....you can really change the sound...I listened to this tune three times and changed it around each time...had lots of room to do so, which means that despite the fact you don't have zillion dollar monitors, you left room for major tweaking, instead of muddying up the whole thing permanently....you've got good ears...gibs

Thanks Wish....your posted reply pretty much answered my question(s) about what I heard.....we use a similar technique for recording acoustic guitar only different equipment....good job on a good song....hopefully there's a pair of monitors somewhere in your future to help make mixing better, more fun and more accurate for you...

Thanks for the comments all. I appreciate all the nice words.

Think it could be time to do a re-mix!!!
