Actually they changed the name to the RNP for Really Nice Pre. Just got this off of the Prosound site.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some facts: same size as the RNC; 2 channels; 0-66 in 6db steps; also has 1/4" jacks on the front so it can be used as a DI; inserts will balance the RNC; also has phase & phantom.
Is that enough?
Didn't think so. The Sound:
First, let me state that my frame of reference is totally different from the rest of yous. Second, we were in a studio that was unfamiliar to me. Third, we only listed to a few, solo sound sources - In other words, like the rest of this ProAudio world, this was not a definitive test; totally subjective.
That said: It sounds really fucking good. We a/b'd it with the pres in a fantastic Neve console and some APIs. While the RNP had a different flavor (from one sound source a VERY slight difference), it was certainly comparable. It sounded amazing. Wide, rich, and beautiful.
As a DI it was great but we were not able to hear it w/ a bass (and I am a bassist) so I have little to report on that front.
I know you want to know when you can get it: well, it'll be a bit. There exists exactly one unit at this time. Soon there will be 10 - to be sent to an already determined set of beta testers; then there will be 25 more - also sent to another group of users who will really run it through its paces. Call FMR completists or whatever, but they're gonna make damned sure that it functions flawlessly before it goes into major production.
In other words - no timeline yet; but it is coming. Patience. It'll be worth it, I promise.
Cost: taget price is $399 - $450 for the 2 channel unit. Where the final price falls in that range will be determined my manufacturing costs that have yet to be nailed down.
Finally, just so you know, I am not a shill for FMR. I am currently writing an article on Mark/FMR for TapeOp so I got invited to yesterdays test. When I know more, I'll post it here.
